I remember back during my first few months in D.C., driving by RFK stadium (which is about the only thing you can do to RFK stadium) captured my imagination. How could such a large arena in such a prominent position sit abandoned for so long? The answer is politics. But yesterday, big movements. The Washington Commanders, coming off a remarkable season, want to return to D.C. For those unaware, they currently play in Maryland. The team is willing to put down 2.7 billion dollars to redevelop the RFK site into a sports, housing, and retail hub. Now, it falls on the D.C. RFK Stadium design is finally built for DC We have new RFK Stadium design renderings, and the best part is it does not try to pretend we are Phoenix or Dallas. It tries to look like Washington.  The roof is the tell. HKS shaped it to rise north and south, but stay lower on the east west axis, specifically so the Capitol and Monument sightlines still rule the skyline. That is a very DC problem, and a very DC solution.  And yes, it is roofed and transparent. That matters. Year round events. Weather protection. More flexibility for big concerts and major events, not just eight Sundays.  If you miss the old RFK chaos, HKS is literally talking about designing for maximum energy and a true home field advantage. A roof helps that, a lot.  They are targeting about 70,000 seats and a 2030 opening, with construction timing discussed around 2027.
