DIY Pallet Compost Bays 🌱 A good composting system is the heart of the vegetable garden, creating nutrient rich compost to mulch the garden and feed the soil, and now is the best time to start one! 🪱😊 I decided to make the compost bays for the new garden using pallets as they are cheap, or free, and generally easy to access. The section of the new garden I chose for the bays had been neglected for a number of years, so was really overgrown with ivy and holly. 🌿 It took me a while, but I eventually cleared the area and then levelled it off ready for the pallets. 😅 For garden use opt for heat treated (HT) and stay away from any which have (MB) printed on them, which means they’ve been treated in a harsh pesticide called Methyl Bromide. Once the main structure was fixed together I added cardboard to the base to mulch the ground until I add organic matter. Then I fixed another palette to the front which I will remove when I need access to the compost. The bays could be used as is, but I’m opting to add a roof to both harvest water and to prevent too much going in. 💦 I’m used 2x2 cut at an angle and then fixed in each corner of each bay and then I added cross members to support the galvanised roofing sheets, attached using roofing screws sealed by a rubber washer. Finally I added a section of gutter to the back which will feed into an IBC tank and that’s the compost bays built! 😊🙌🏻 I’m really happy with how they look and you can find a more detailed guide for these, as well as other diy garden projects in my new book, there’s a link in my bio 🌱 So how do you make your own compost? 😊 #gardeningtips #compost #gardenproject

For about a year we’ve been collecting organic rubbish (food scraps, manure, and yard waste) to create compost for our gardens. Our original setup quickly filled up and became unmanageable, so at the start of Spring we built a new compost setup! Three stalls (new, mid-cycle, ready-to-use) that are much larger to accommodate the scale we need. Each stall is open to the elements (self-watering) and wrapped in hardware cloth to allow plenty of airflow, and the front slats slide out to make the pile wheelbarrow-accessible. I’m very proud of our handiwork and glad it’s ready in time for vegetable garden prep!

If you don’t have room for a compost heap, yet still want to recycle your kitchen scraps and covert all those nutrients into plant food, then here is a great solution. Take a short length of pipe. Drill a few holes into the lower half. And plunge the lower half into your raised bed. I put one of these in a raised bed about every square metre. Feed the pipe with your kitchen scraps such as veg peelings and fruit waste. And they will gradually decompose. As the kitchen scraps decompose, the nutrients will naturally leach out of the holes in the pipe and feed surrounding nutrients. The worms will also move in and out, helping to transfer the decomposing kitchen scraps nutrients into the surrounding soil or compost. If you don’t have a spare bit of pipe, you can repurpose a cheap old bin or hanging basket. So long as it is porous or has lots of holes in.

Looking for a budget-friendly way to level up your gardening game? Pallets are hands-down the best secret weapon for DIY composting! This setup has been going strong for 15 years, proving that you don’t need fancy, expensive bins to get incredible results. The design is simple but effective: sturdy pallet walls with removable front boards that make it easy to turn the pile and harvest that "black gold" when it's ready. By layering brown materials (like dried leaves or cardboard) with green materials (like kitchen scraps or grass clippings), you create the perfect environment for decomposition. A pro tip for those in drier climates: don't be afraid to add water! Keeping your compost moist is key to keeping the microbes active. This system even features a rabbit hutch on top, adding extra nutrients directly into the mix. It’s functional, sustainable, and nearly free to build. 20 tips that made my compost pile way better 🌱 1. Chop food waste smaller. 2. Mix food scraps with dry browns (cardboard, leaves, woodchip). 3. Aim for roughly 2 parts browns to 1 part greens. 4. Turn the pile occasionally to introduce oxygen. 5. Keep it moist like a wrung-out sponge. 6. Add diversity. The more different materials, the better. 7. Don’t let big clumps of food waste sit together. 8. Cover fresh scraps with browns to prevent flies. 9. Avoid adding huge amounts of one thing at once. 10. Keep some structure in the pile so air can move through it. 11. Add finished compost or soil to introduce microbes. 12. Protect the pile from heavy rain. 13. If it smells, add more browns and mix. 14. If it’s dry and not breaking down, add moisture. 15. Balance soft materials with woody ones. 16. Don’t rush it. Good compost takes time. 17. Let the pile heat up and cool down naturally. 18. Avoid compacting the pile. 19. Give it space. Bigger piles compost better. 20. When it smells earthy and looks dark and crumbly… it’s ready. Compost isn’t just waste breaking down. It’s a living ecosystem working quietly under your feet. Save this for the next time your pile needs a reset. #compost #soil #soilhealth #foodwaste #gardening

I threw these bins together last summer with a plan to put new ones together this spring. Notice how cooked down the one on the left is? It was filled all the way to the top in late December when we started feeding the right hand bin. Stay tuned for the update on our new bins!!

One job every allotment holder should be doing over the winter (if you don’t already have one), is to make a compost bay. The easiest and cheapest way to do this is to use pallets. I’ve just secured mine together with some screws but cable ties will work fine. Then I’ve lined the bottom level with groundsheet to stop the smaller bits from falling through the gaps. I put down some cardboard to stop weeds from growing in here and that’s it! Now I have a place to throw all my old crops and weeds into and maybe sometime in the future I’ll have actual compost I can use in my plot! I joke about that because compost is still something I’m trying to figure out, but I am working on it! #allotment #allotmentjobs #palletproject #compostbay #palletcompostbin

Tending to my box of Earth. Creating soil. Nourishing the land. Recycling our otherwise waste. I find this one of the most fulfilling homemaking tasks! I imagine our lush plants love us right back 🫶 《Compost 101》 ▪︎ Lift, stir, aerate the pile to loosen and spread moisture. ▪︎ Add the new scraps- veggie waste, leftovers (lest processed foods), coffee, tea, egg shells, clean bones. ▪︎ Stir in the new stuff. ▪︎ Always end with a fresh cover of mulch, leaves, saw dust, ash or soil. This living lid shelters the ecosystem and prevents odor or animals from investigating. ☆ I have a full blog post on our website on how to start and manage an urban backyard compost pile, with tips, pictures and why we do it. ✌️
