PEThe secret to perfect compost?
Most heaps fail because they lean too far one way.
Too many “greens” (like grass clippings and veg peelings) turn to sludge.
Too many “browns” (like straw and cardboard) just sit there doing nothing.
This is the the mix that works for me:
Equal parts greens + browns
Air – turn the heap every few weeks
Moisture – like a wrung-out sponge
Patience – 6 to 12 months
When it smells like woodland and crumbles in your hand, you’ve struck black gold!

SUHow I Compost In My Apartment 🌿🍎🍐🍊🍑🍅🥬🌽🥦🥖🍠
We get this question A LOT. Did you know that food scraps don’t biodegrade in landfill? They don’t have access to oxygen or sunlight, so this causes them to omit methane into the atmosphere, which is 10x more potent than Co2!! This is why composting is so important for a healthy environment! 🌎🌞🌳
So here’s exactly how we compost: we use a bin with a lid and keep it in the kitchen on the floor, use @biobag liners that are certified compostable in industrial facilities (so not backyard compostable), we take it out roughly once a week or once it’s full, and drop it off at our local compost drop off site since our apartment doesn’t offer curbside pickup. You can check online to see if your city offers curbside and sign up for a free bin! If not, you can search online for community drop off sites near you to leave it. Some co-ops also offer compost drop off! I used to have curbside pick up but not anymore since I moved, and I’m honestly loving it! I walk about a mile to drop off my compost and it’s one of my highlights of the week ☺️✨🌿

KIComposting made easy 🌱
I use a sprinkler valve in each corner of my raised garden boxes.
I fill them with kitchen scraps and let the decomposers in my soil do the rest.
Each corner becomes its own self-feeding compost system (it's actually called Vermicomposting) — no turning, no pile, no extra work.
When one valve is full, I move to the next corner.
It takes a couple of weeks to break down, so by the time I circle back, it’s ready for more scraps.
✨ Don’t overthink composting.
Do what works for your garden and what’s easiest for your setup.

These problems are very common wi the composting bins - but here’s how to fix them!
Got a stinky bin? 🤢
✅ Add in more dry material and mix and aerate the soil well - think newspaper, dry leaves or cardboard.
Spot some ants or pests? 🐜🪳🐀
✅ Add in more ‘greens’ like fruit and veggie scraps, green garden clippings and a little water. Keep the lid closed and make sure the contents are damp like a wrung-out sponge. If you’re noticing signs of rats, put some wire mesh underneath your compost bin to keep them out.
Nothing’s happening? 🥱😐
✅ Add in more greens, give it a good mix and move your bin to a sunnier spot to activate the microbes!

HEHow to get ✨perfect✨ compost with a plastic compost bin 🌱 Note - this isn’t an extensive guide - but a good place to get started if you’re new to composting 🤎
🪱 First things first, make sure your bin is on top of soil for best results - this is so worms and other insects can move up into the composting matter and help break down materials - if you have to put it on concrete, it’s not the end of the world, but things will happen more slowly.
💚 Be aware of what you put in your compost. Ideally you want a balanced mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ material - there are lots of different ratios out there quoted but try 2 parts green to 1 part brown to start with and adjust as you go. Try and make the bits you add to the bin as small as possible (even smaller than in this video if you can!) and turn the compost pile as you go to get a good mix of materials throughout and add oxygen to the pile.
Green = wet, nitrogen-rich materials such as grass clippings, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, and fresh leaves
Brown = dry, carbon-rich material such as dry leaves and grasses, newspaper, dead plant clippings, wood branches, hay, straw, sawdust
💦 Compost should be moist but not soaking, so if you need to, add a bit of moisture. Some people chose to leave the top of plastic bins off so that rain water can get in, but this depends on your rain levels, and does cool the bin down.
