Behavior Analysts love data... but sometimes we track the wrong thing. Your weight is an outcome, not a behavior. What actually moves the needle is identifying and engaging in specific health behaviors. The ones you can observe, measure, and shape... so that you can track progress within your control... Not bodyweight fluctuations that is pretty much a confounding variable. The Breaking Bad Plot Twist: A Masterclass in Data Analytics & Root Cause Analysis #shorts Correlation does not imply causation... but sometimes, the evidence is planted right in front of you.” In this video, we break down one of the most chilling moments in television history through the lens of Data Science and Strategic Analytics. For an entire season, Walter White manipulated the “data points” to lead Jesse Pinkman and the audience to a false conclusion. While most viewers see a plot twist, an analyst sees a Confounding Variable. Educational Purpose & Copyright Notice: This content is shared strictly for educational and illustrative purposes. Does meat cause cancer? Or is it simply that people who eat lots of meat tend to eat less fiber? There are some studies correlating meat intake to cancer incidence but many of these studies are confounded by the fact that people don’t make nutritional selections in a vacuum. If they eat more of something they tend to eat less of something else. In the case of people who eat high intakes of meat, they tend to consume less fiber by about half compared to vegetarians or vegans (PMID: 35010904) This is a huge confounding variable because fiber intake, particularly from fruits & vegetables has been shown to decrease the risk of CVD and cancer by 10% for each 10g increase in dietary fiber (PMID: 25552267) so is it meat causing increased cancer risk or a lack of dietary fiber? A study by Maximova (PMID: 32751091) looked at cancer incidence during 13.5 years of follow up of over 26,000 people and found that amounts people consuming low fruits & vegetable intake, increase red meat consumption increased the risk of cancer, however when the researchers looked at people who consumed high amounts of fruits & Vegetables, there was no difference in cancer incidence amongst people who consumed low red meat or high red meat intake. To me, this is good evidence that the associations between meat & cancer incidence are more likely a function of a lack of fiber rather than a cause of meat. Moral of the story, eat your fiber, fruits, & vegetables kiddos 👊🏻 If you are struggling with nutrition & having trouble reaching your goals check out my nutrition coaching app @carbondietcoach for only $9.99 per month you get customized nutrition recommendations that adjust based on how you progress to optimize your results. 1. Dr. Sarah Hallberg spent 16 years as an internist before she started tracking why her female patients kept coming back undiagnosed. The pattern was identical across hundreds of cases: chest tightness dismissed as anxiety, extreme fatigue labeled as depression, cognitive fog attributed to stress. When she presented her findings at a medical conference, she was told the data was “confounded by emotional reporting.” “They weren’t misdiagnosing women,” she said. “They were using a diagnostic framework built entirely on male symptom presentation.” 2. The mechanism runs through medical school training. Until 1993, women were routinely excluded from clinical drug trials — hormonal variation was considered a confounding variable. Every symptom checklist, every diagnostic threshold, every “typical presentation” was calibrated on male patients. A woman having a heart attack presents differently than a man. Her symptoms don’t match the checklist. The checklist says anxiety. 3. Hallberg’s protocol: document every symptom with time, duration, and functional impact before any appointment. Women who arrived with written logs received diagnostic testing 3x more often than those who described symptoms verbally. “The system was built to dismiss emotional communication. Give it data it can’t dismiss.” 4. One patient had been told she had anxiety for 7 years: “I kept a symptom log for 3 months and brought it to a new doctor. Within one appointment she ordered tests my previous doctors never ran. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition that had been progressing untreated for years. The anxiety was a symptom. Not the diagnosis.” 5. You weren’t overreacting. You were describing real symptoms to a system trained to call them something else. Have you ever been sent home with an anxiety diagnosis that turned out to be something else? 👉 This is one gap. Let’s talk making a school list ⬇️⬇️ The truth is, you could have a stellar application and still not get into med school for many reasons. One of those reasons is… you guessed it.. a poorly selected school list!! But not to worry, here’s how to avoid making a common mistake ⬇️⬇️ 1. First, determine if the school is public or private. Usually public schools are the schools you have to look out for when it comes to IS bias. 2. Use the MSAR (medical school admissions requirements) website (payed resources) and look under the Applications Accepted tab. It will say how that school considers IS vs OOS (or international) applicants. Don’t stop here though, because some schools say they consider IS and OOS the same, but there is still an obvious difference in interviewed applicants. (There could be many reasons for this - confounding variable sort of thing) 3. Look at the matriculation data next, specifically at the Interviewed section. Although this may not be fully representative (people can decline their interviews and this is only interviewED not interviews offered) But this is the best that we have 😅 If there are 600 people from IS that were interviewed and only 10 people from OOS that were interviewed, for example, it is obvious that school is heavily selecting IS students (confounding variable or not). Applying to this school as an OOS student with no strong ties (see ***Note) is very low-yield. You can try, but it’s low-yield. ***Note: Strong ties means you have significant ties to that state. So you grew up there, you did your undergrad there and want to stay in the area, etc. This tie would need to be highlighted/emphasized in a secondary essay. Again, do not underestimate the importance of a well-researched school list!! Have you ever considered that the way in which nutritional research is conducted is fundamentally flawed? This is precisely why we must scrutinize everything we know about nutritional science. Consider this: isolated blue light, the kind that’s emitted from the modern LEDs we use for nearly all indoor lighting, can significantly raise blood glucose and insulin levels. On the flip side, red light by itself can potently lower blood glucose levels. This revelation has enormous implications for how we study nutrition, yet it’s largely overlooked. Every nutritional study or randomized control trial has been conducted under the influence of artificial blue light and amidst non-native electromagnetic fields like WiFi. This alone introduces such a significant confounding variable that we should approach the conclusions of any nutrition study with a high degree of skepticism. These studies take place in artificial environments that don’t mirror how our physiology would function in our natural setting – outdoors, under the sun. Light profoundly influences metabolism, but this factor is often ignored in nutritional research. According to the authors, prolonged exposure to blue light may lead to glucose dysregulation, akin to pre-diabetes, regardless of diet. The common belief that diabetes stems from carbohydrate overload is challenged here. Instead, the suggestion is that diabetes is fundamentally a disease caused by blue light toxicity, which is only worsened by carbohydrate consumption. Red light, the predominant spectrum in sunlight, appears to be the key to glucose regulation. The mistake of studying nutrition in the wrong setting has likely led us to draw many incorrect conclusions about nutrition and diseases like diabetes. Recognizing that light may be more influential than food could be the first step toward regaining control of our blood sugar levels and, by extension, our overall health. Once nutrition studies are done under natural sunlight instead of glucose and insulin-stimulating blue light, then we can get a more realistic picture of how metabolism truly works. #Nutrition #Health #Light #Sunlight #Sun #Bluelight #RedLight

So of course I shaped it around my head and over my face. ALSO: 1) I made the video very short. 2) Apparently that makes it loop. 3) Which means more views? Maybe? I notice my thirty second to one minute reels have an average view time of just 6 or 7 seconds. Fine by me. If I make my video half of that, will I double my views? Guess I will find out. 4) Just realized a mistake in this experiment design. 5) I also made the caption extremely long, adding multiple ideas. This is a confounding variable as the extended text may increase dwell time on the reel. 6) Probably should have run two different, independent experiments, multiple times. 7) Too late now. I mean, I’ve spent all this time typing with my thumbs. There’s no way I’m deleting all this text now. 8) This writing is reminding me of my letter writing days in the 89’s and 90’s. Primarily in that I never learned to wrap things up neatly. I tended to keep on rambling, adding miscellaneous thoughts and non -sequiturs. I seem to be doing that now.

TLDR: In the real world there are a million and one confounding variables that can make something untrue, seem true. Science tries to control for those variables so we can actually know what is probably true and probably untrue.

Have you ever heard of the placebo effect? In research, we often control for this confounding variable to eliminate any experimental bias. Think about it- the placebo effect is so powerful, we have to dedicate a whole control group solely to eliminate this bias. But what is it? The placebo effect refers to the possibility that thought might alter experimental results. That’s it- just thought! Simply by THINKING something is going to work can alter its results. How powerful must our mind be! This is why it is important to use your mind in your health and fitness. It can offer you an advantage- if used positively. In the same manner; however, negative thoughts can offer a great disadvantage. This is why my 30 Day Hard Reset not only helps you build healthy habits, but also helps you improve your mindset. I want to give every advantage I can to help you reach your health and fitness goals! Message me MINDSET for a free worksheet from my program to help you get started!
