IAThis dive captured a Crown-of-Thorns Starfish, one of the most controversial animals on coral reefs. Known for feeding on live coral, these starfish can cause serious reef damage when their population explodes. In some regions, divers actively remove or cull them to protect reefs.
I don’t kill anything underwater. In this moment, I gently rolled this Crown-of-Thorns over to show its underside, where its feeding system and tube feet are located, then left it exactly where it was. Encounters like this are about education and understanding how reef ecosystems really work, not interfering with nature.

Crown-of-Thorns starfish can consume up to 10 square meters of coral per year
They feed by pushing their stomach out of their body onto coral to digest it externally
A single female can release millions of eggs during spawning events

ANI’ve worked with wolves and wolfdogs for over 20 years and they are a very misunderstood species. Reputations dirtied by hunters, farmers and ranchers who despite only losing 0.5% of animals to wolves, still persecute them. Norway is particularly upsetting as it has great swathes of wilderness yet they cull the wolves to around 60. This means the wolves’ genetic diversity must be horrendous. I’d love to see a genetic test done to determine the COI (Coefficient of inbreeding) as I bet it would be as bad as some pure bred dog breeds. Norweigen citizens have told me that most of the country like the wolves but due to politicians constantly pandering to farmers the hunt continues. Why can’t they use flock guardian dogs like The Great Pyrenees who lived northerly weather and are sweet to humans too? It’s just lazy management. Since I was born I swear the wolf population has halved across the world. All I see is nature disappearing in favour of industry. A sad era to witness.

BOAdam and Adora have been in sanctuary for four years! So happy they are here with us — safe and loved. They were both part of a farm program who planned to cull them by way of thumping due to them being runts. 😭💜 Sometimes I genuinely cannot believe some of the practices used by farmers and ag programs are legal. Farmed animals barely have laws protecting them … so I shouldn’t be surprised.
