30Protoype Cyclops Blast Shield from X-Men (2000) developed by Oakley in 1999.

Filming for the first X-Men movie began in 1999, right when Oakley was cementing its position as a leader of innovation in the eyewear market, so it is no surprise that they were approached to design the eyewear worn by James Marsden’s character ‘Scott Summers/Cyclops’. They provided a pair of custom X-Metal Juliet sunglasses with added shields on the sides and ruby iridium lenses, representing the ‘ruby quartz’ cyclops required on his eyewear, to protect the environment from the optic blast emitted from his eyes. While they were on the job, legendary designer Hans Moritz also began working on designs for a visor, leading to the production of this early prototype which was moulded to James Marsden’s face and used for early costume testing and screen tests. There were a few different prototypes made with some varying modifications as different scenes had different requirements. The final version used in the final cut of the movie features no Oakley branding but instead a rotating disc to control the blast. A 3-D scan of the visor was showcased on the website at the time and some of the prototypes were also displayed in Oakley stores when the movie was released in the cinema.

COPeek into the latest version of my mirrored Proxima helmet. It's very hard to achieve a clean look as we had to fine tune molds and process, but we're there. The adhesive pads that hold the visor in place, allowing the iconic clean and minimal look of Proxima, are not really suited for this chrome painted version, for the adhesive might chip the paint in a few spots - almost unnoticeable here. It's a makeshift product aimed to test a concept and not an actual serial production item, so we won't put it in the shop - I'll design a dedicated new frame with outer rims to hold the visor instead of using the adhesive pads, in the future. However, if you like this minimal, full-visor mirrored version of our Proxima, you can shoot us a DM for preordering your copy - delivery by the end of the year. And - brace yourselves for the Red Hood version. Shoot a DM for more info and prices, knowing that, with all that goes into producing these, they're not cheap!
