M0This encounter is for level 2-3, and relies on the fact that even with darkvision you see as in dim light, which means you have disadvantage on perception, aka -5 to your passive perception.
A 10 feet wide corridor with a gelatinous cube at each end is an absolute nightmare to deal with, and a good way to teach players the limits of darkvision.
The cube blocking the end of the corridor would require a 15 passive perception to see. The one on the ceiling, since it has time to set up would take 20 (as per the DMG), and as such require a 16 passive perception to see.
with a -5 to it, it’s going to be hard to notice, especially at level 2-3.
