IRYou can’t build an ML model without data.
For pedestrian intent prediction, I’m using the JAAD (Joint Attention in Autonomous Driving).
JAAD contains real-world driving videos recorded from a vehicle’s perspective, with detailed annotations for pedestrians.
What makes it interesting isn’t just bounding boxes.
It includes:
• Pedestrian locations (bounding boxes per frame)
• Crossing vs not crossing labels
• Behavioral cues (looking, walking, standing)
• Scene context (weather, time of day, intersections)
This matters because intent isn’t purely motion-based.
Sometimes a pedestrian slows down.
Sometimes they look at the vehicle.
Sometimes they hesitate.
Those subtle cues are what the model needs to learn.
In the pipeline so far:
CNN → extracts visual features
LSTM / ConvLSTM → models motion over time
JAAD → provides labeled real-world sequences for training
Next: training the model and seeing if it actually works.
Building with real data > toy datasets.
