What took you so long? 🥹 My sophomore year of college, I got cut from the dance team... And not just any dance and pom team, the most recognizable uniform in all of college football, the world famous @uscsonggirls... I was going out for a second year, and I didn't make it... It was one of the hardest decisions that had ever happened to me... I didn't know who I was NOT being a dancer! For my WHOLE life, until that moment, my everything -- my routine and closet and schedule and diet and friendships and IDENTITY -- revolved around dance... But, if I was being honest with myself, my heart wasn't in it anymore... I didn't prepare for the audition, like I had the year prior... My body and mind were fatigued... And I had no idea who I was beyond my title and performance (which was a challenge and a lesson that would come up again, beyond dance, but that's for another time)... And, so... It was actually the BEST decision that could've happened FOR me. That's when I learned to fall in love with the process of STARTING OVER. (Also, a story for another time.) But, what also happened was I hung up my dance shoes... My ego bruise was one I was too afraid to heal... The joy and passion I had for dance was now tangled in rejection, failure, and perfectionism... And, because I didn't want to get back into the "dance diet" again, the story I told myself was that my body would never be good enough to get back into class... Until now 🙃 Jumping back into watching the return of the @dccheerleaders to the screen with a new iteration of their series on @netflix, I'd shared on social media my longing for dance, class, auditioning, kicking, stretching, all of it. And, to my surprise, someone (this one, @yeahthatsright, my friend and instructor from @barrys) reached out and said, "Let's take a class! I'll go with you!" We both agreed. We picked a class. We thought about backing out. But, we made it. All of that to say, you're never too old and you're always enough and it's never too late to go do that JOY you've always wanted to do or haven't done in a long time. It might not look or feel the same, but your body will know what to do 🩷
