1981 The Beginning of a Legend
In 1981, the debut album Speak & Spell was released — it marked the beginning of the new synth-pop wave, while the track Just Can't Get Enough is still considered one of the band’s most recognizable and upbeat classics.
2010 The Era of Global Stadiums
The Tour of the Universe became one of the biggest tours in the band’s history, attracting more than 2.5 million fans worldwide. For many fans, it symbolizes the absolute peak of Depeche Mode’s live power.

WOThe band would normally refine Martin’s demos. But Flood wanted to change this from the start. The finished product often turned very similar to the demo. The next track they worked was ‘Policy of truth’ and again started off a little bit the way it had been from the demo and they decided to experiment and tried to get this feeling that was not rock, but it was driven by synths, they added the guitar riff and the way the drums were programmed. It was a definite shift in everybody’s attitude.
The song had many sonic hidden layers; years ahead it was featured in the trailer of Agatha Christie’s movie based “Dead in the Nile”, starring Gal Gadot and Kenneth Branagh and also in Robert Lepage’s film “The confessional”. It was released as the third single in May 1990, three weeks before the World Violation Tour kicked off, and ranked at number 16 in British charts. Francõis Kevorkian (with a Richard Nixon's sample) and The KLF remixed the track.
@antoncorbijn4real filmed the video in New York, while he was conducting photoshoots and filming footage to be used for the screens of the World Violation Tour. Gahan drove a 1958 Ford Fairlane Club Victoria across the Meatpacking District, Andy was at the East River Promenade, near Williamsburg Bridge and Martin shots were taken at the Central Park. B-side was an instrumental called "Kaleid", which was used as intro for the 'Word Violation Tour' and samples of the song 'What Ruthy said' by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and also from 1967 song 'Hey Joe' by Jimmy Hendrix.

Zwei Kinderreporter hatten die Chance, die Acts während den Aufnahmen zu „HELP(2)“ interviewen. Darunter waren auch Depeche Mode, die den Cover-Song „Universal Soldier“ zur Charity Compilation beigesteuert haben.
Das Projekt unterstützt Kinder in Not in Krisengebieten – neben Depeche Mode sind darauf u.a. Arctic Monkeys, Arlo Parks, Olivia Rodrigo, Pulp, Sampha, The Last Dinner Party, Wet Leg, Young Fathers und viele weitere helfende Stimmen zu hören.
Bereits 1995 schlossen sich zentrale Größen der britischen Musikszene zusammen, um mit den Erlösen der gemeinsamen HELP-Compilation Kinder in Kriegsgebieten zu unterstützen. „HELP(2)“ ist die Fortsetzung der damaligen Initiative.
Alle Einnahmen aus dem Album unterstützen @warchilduk dabei, Kinder, die in Konfliktgebieten leben, zu schützen, zu bilden und sich für ihre Rechte einzusetzen.

Back in 1995, key figures from the British music scene joined forces to support children in war zones with the proceeds from the original HELP compilation. “HELP(2)” is the continuation of that initiative.
All proceeds from the album support @warchilduk in protecting, educating, and advocating for the rights of children living in conflict areas.

WOThe second remix collection ‘Remixes 2: 81-11’ was released on June 2011 by Mute Records, following Remixes 81-04. It spanned the band’s entire career up that point and included new arrangements by former Depeche members Vince Clarke (Behind the wheel) and Alan Wilder (In chains). The compilation concluded the group’s recording contract with EMI. It was preceded by the single “Personal Jesus 2011” by Norwegian production team Tor Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen, also known as ‘Stargate’. Patrick Daughters directed the video in Czech Republic. British actress Sarah Beck Mather starred on it. It was based on witch trials during the English civil war in the seventeenth century.
After being a parent for the fourth time of Astrid, Wilder bought a house in Holmestrand, Norway. He's currently researching his ancestral family history and planning to move to Withdean, a neighborhood in Brighton and Clarke collaborated with composer Daniel Blumberg for the 2025 Oscar winning score for the film “The brutalist”.
