Finally got to see this cool anglerfish over the weekend🥳, it had been on my list for a long time!
The Monkfish - Breiflabb - Lophius piscatorius
🔍 Monkfish are known for their ambush hunting strategy. They lie on the seabed and use a modified spine on their head as a lure to attract smaller fish. Once the prey gets close, the monkfish uses powerful suction to swallow it whole👀.
🐟I was so excited when it started moving the lure, it looked really cool. My buddy actually thought it was a small fish at first, so yeah, it’s a pretty convincing trick!
🤔I started wondering if the monkfish moved the lure because it was annoyed by us or if it was actually trying to hunt us. Maybe it thought the camera was the right size for a snack🤔
Anyway, what an interesting life, just lying around on the ocean floor, waiting for something tasty to swim right over your mouth otherwise you go hungry😳.

In the past, fishermen were apparently convinced that this fish was a bad omen. After catching one, they would throw it back into the water, end their day’s fishing, and head straight back to shore.
But then, one day, someone tried eating it and discovered it was delicious. It quickly became popular and is sometimes known as “poor man's lobster” due to its similar taste.
Notice the little growths covering the teeths, such a smart camouflage 😳
