🚀 From the Moon to your health: Apollo taught us three huge things about the human body: 1️⃣ Bone & muscle loss → better treatments for osteoporosis & bedridden patients 2️⃣ Fluid shifts & heart changes → improved rehab & fluid management in hospitals 3️⃣ Immune & stress response → understanding immune suppression, helping immunocompromised patients 🌕 Now Artemis goes further: partial gravity, radiation, brain & vision, immunity & stress—a living lab for breakthroughs we can use here on Earth. 👩‍⚕️ Follow for science-backed insights on current events! #nasa #artemis #space #healthcare #doctorsofinstagram

Dr. Arun Sharma, PhD, director of the Center for Space Medicine Research, is studying how human heart cells behave in microgravity. In space, bones and muscles weaken quickly, and cells behave very differently than they do on Earth. That shift allows researchers to study disease and human biology in ways that aren’t possible under normal gravity. This research could lead to new therapies that couldn't be created on the ground.

Let’s talk Space Medicine. 💊 A common cold on Earth means taking a day off and binging Netflix. A common cold on the way to Mars? That is a biological security nightmare. 🚨🦠 When humans leave Earth, microgravity acts like a villain origin story for bacteria. Harmless Earth germs mutate faster, grow thicker microscopic armor, and basically laugh at our antibiotics. Combine that with suppressed immune systems and a sealed metal tube... and an outbreak 100 million miles from the nearest pharmacy is a catastrophic mission failure. So how do we stop it? Biomedical engineering. 🧬 1️⃣ Invisible Spike Pits: Engineers are designing spacecraft walls with microscopic textures that physically shred bacteria on contact. 2️⃣ DNA Sniffers: Autonomous bio-sensors constantly monitor the ship's air and water, acting as a real-time hazard detection network to catch pathogens before anyone even sneezes. QOTD: Would you volunteer for a 7-month trip to Mars knowing you can't just go to the doctor if you get sick? In space, astronauts are exposed to radiation levels much higher than on Earth's surface - and keeping astronauts safe while mitigating this radiation is one of the biggest factors affecting long-term space travel 🚀 Our next #CountdowntoArtemisII expert, Marcelo E. Vazquez, MD, Ph.D. is the Radiobiology Section Head at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories. Marcelo works with organoids to better understand how humans respond to long-term exposure of radiation. This work is done to not only help astronauts, but people down on Earth. Check out Part 1 of the interview here and learn more about Marcelo's journey and radiation biology!

At the Artemis II rollout, I learned about AVATAR – a NASA investigation using organ-on-a-chip technology to study how the human body responds to deep-space stressors like radiation and microgravity. I sat down with Julie from the communications team to ask what I actually wanted to know: what does this mean for people who have historically been left out of medical research? Black and Brown communities. Women. Groups whose biology has been understudied for decades. Organ-on-a-chip allows researchers to model human physiology in ways that could eventually enable far more personalized, representative medicine. The data being collected to keep astronauts healthy in space is the same data that could close long-standing gaps in how we understand and treat disease here on Earth. @nasascience_ @nasakennedy @nasa.social @nasa #NASA #Artemis #SpaceMedicine #HealthEquity #WomenInSTEM

MIT researchers have developed a nanotechnology-based material that could help protect astronauts from harmful space radiation. The new material is designed to block or absorb high-energy particles that astronauts are exposed to during long missions beyond Earth’s protective atmosphere. Scientists say this could be a major step toward safer deep-space travel, including missions to the Moon and Mars. Improved radiation shielding is critical for future exploration, as prolonged exposure can increase risks of cancer and other health issues.
