YOAs a therapist, I often hear teens say the rules around their phone feel unfair. Not because they want total freedom, but because the expectations do not always align with what they observe at home.
When rules feel unfair, teens tend to disengage rather than cooperate. That is usually where the disconnect begins.
5 tech-related double standards we put on teens:
1️⃣ Teens are told to limit screen time
while adults frequently use phones to decompress, distract, or self-soothe.
2️⃣ Teens are criticized for being ‘on their phone too much’
while adult phone use is framed as productivity or necessity.
3️⃣ Teens are expected to disengage immediately
while adults finish messages, emails, or scrolling.
4️⃣ Teens are warned that phones are “ruining mental health” while adults rely on digital connection for regulation and relief.
5️⃣ Teens lose access to phones as a consequence
while adults maintain access even during stress or conflict.
💡When parents explain the why and model the expectation, tech boundaries tend to create connection instead of distance.
