This is a drop spindle, used in a different way than a spindle wheel like you see in the movie and much less dangerous. If you’ve ever used a drop spindle then you’ll know how important it is to keep the fiber out of the way to prevent it from becoming twisted around the spindle. One way to do this is with a distaff such as this one made by @angela.lynne.studios that is a modern take on a very ancient tool, because even thousands of years ago spinners needed a way to keep their extra fiber away from the spindle. I wonder if their distaffs had cute designs like this one! P.S. I’ve been answering your most asked spindle questions on my stories, so be sure to keep an eye out. I'm so happy with this spindle! 🤩 It’s way more comfortable than a drop spindle, and I love having both hands free! So far, I had only seen it used for fine spinning, so I had my doubts. And yes—when spinning thick yarn, you do have to kick more often, but every single kick is totally worth the workout! 🤭 Huge shoutout to @bobbinexchange for creating this wonder—and to my love who found it and thought of the perfect gift for me ❤️ Next step: Artyarns! Yes I deliberately leave in plenty of lumps and bumps. When I have the privilege of spinning a raw product like this, I like to retain some of its natural texture. . . . Spinning wheel vs. spindle, what do you prefer? I love spinning on my wheel when I want to spin a lot of yarn quickly, and don’t need it to be super thin. The problem is that if I sit down by the wheel the time flies by and I often stay several hours! In a production aspect that’s great, but as spinning is often an “in between” craft for me it can become a problem when I find my day suddenly missing a substantial chunk of time. The drop spindle on the other hand is slower to spin on, but can be brought everywhere and there’s no temptation to “just fill this bobbin”. In the end I actually often prefer to use a simple drop spindle, and I end up getting more yarn spun on it as I can keep it with me stashed by my computer while doing admin, or like here, in my beach basket so I can spin a bit while warming up before jumping in the lake. If you want a drop spindle of your own I have had a bunch of them made to my preferences that I offer for sale in my webshop, linked in my bio ❤️ #handspinning #handspunyarn #sloyd #slöjd #dropspindle #spinningwheel
