GRBeing almost 50% DVM has me reflecting on the things I wish I knew (or heard and ignored!) Realistically, these all were things I heard and thought “they don’t apply to me! I KNOW I want to be a vet” or “okay sure but I’m doing it my way!” Turns out… lots of pretty good advice I wish I took!
1. GO WHERE IT’S CHEAPEST. For undergrad. For vet school. For everything. I get more than anyone that the student loan debt feels like an inevitable “fake” number you just have to accept, but it is a life altering amount of loans in which repayment/forgiveness/federal programs are ever dwindling. I chose a more expensive undergrad for the “prestige” and an early-acceptance vet program over a near full ride to a different university (and didn’t even end up going through with the early acceptance there). That debt is collecting interest throughout your entire vet school journey and mine will be a huge addition to my DVM loan burden. DONT DO THAT! Especially with private loan rates of ~15%, it is NOT worth it. Establish residency for a year if you have to! & remember, private loans are NOT eligible for federal repayment plans like PSLF 💸
2. TRY OTHER CAREERS. We all feel like veterinary medicine is our “only way.” If that is true, yay! Welcome to the profession. However, I think so many pre-vets have adopted this path as a core identity piece and are afraid/feel guilty for exploring. All you are hurting is your future self! You WILL question this path. Set yourself up to still feel confident in your decision because you gave yourself the chance to explore. This goes for all professions. 🎉
3. DO THINGS THAT HAVE 0% IN COMMON WITH VET MED. From an application stand point, essentially every applicant is a pre-vet club member, has worked at clinics and shadowed. Additionally, you’ll be asked to write full essays or answer interview questions on your passions outside of vet med. Prepare yourself to stand out and NOT struggle on that commonly strugglesome question by finding things you love without animals/vet med. These will also be things you can do as a real adult or vet student to recenter yourself, lessen stress and make this a PROFESSION rather than a highway to burnout ❤️
