Wait until the end for the final score 📺 It’s no surprise I’m passionate about erging so I’m excited to share a bit more content around it going forward ⛓️ This was a 10km erg test back in November 2024 and I was trying to break our college’s record time, held by the legend @simon_vandorp. It was one of the mentally toughest tests I have done and there were many points where I wanted to stop or didn’t think I could get the record I started slowly bringing down the splits from about 4km out, it was painful but the numbers were dropping so I had a chance. With about 500m to go, I saw I still had 4-5 seconds to drop on my projected finish time if I wanted to break the record. I was winding it good but with 150m to go I needed to have a big last kick I beat the record by just 0.3 seconds, not splits, seconds. I was so close to not doing it, and you can hear the pure joy once I saw the finish time. I am a bit embarrassed about yelling at the end but I wanted to keep the audio as I’m proud of passion it took to get through this erg, and that passion came out with a shout 🗣️ Anyway, I’m excited about the thought of beating my personal bests in all erg distances in the future and I’m keen to share them on here #erg #ergo #rowing #concept2

Busy rowers, here’s a simple strength training format to get you rowing faster, even if you don’t know where to start 💪 For a lot of masters rowers finding where to include strength training alongside rowing and erging can be one of the hardest things to manage. This session can be completed in under 40 minutes and improves movement quality, and builds strength that transfers to the boat. Movement Mechanics (activation / priming / prehab) 1️⃣8 Point Balance x 8 each hand/each leg 2️⃣Dead Bugs x 6 each side (2 sets) 3️⃣Scapula Push up x 8 (2 sets) Strength 1️⃣Leg Press x 8 2️⃣DB Incline Press x 8 3️⃣One Arm 3-Point Row x 6 each side 4️⃣Single Leg Eccentric Squat x 8 each side 5️⃣Front Plank x 30sec ✅3 sets of each (60-90sec rest between sets) Replace the Leg Press with a front foot elevated split squat, for a session you could even do at home

The amount of skill and pure fitness needed to row a sub 5:40 2000m row is so incredibly hard to achieve, it’s amazing how EASY it can look from the outside perspective. But how does it look so easy? Well, technique of course! There’s a couple great things going on that ALL OF US can use to help us with our own rowing. 1. The forward lean! Arguably the most important technique fix. It’s NOT about bending your legs all the way up, but instead getting a good bend in the legs AFTER the torso is leaned forward, shoulders in front of hips! 2. The lay back! Legs flat, and handle pulled in right below the chest! Not nonsense with pulling into the neck or the stomach… just right where it needs to be to stay long and efficient! To get fast 2ks, it’s really going to come down to your fitness for the most part, but having good technique IS an important piece of the puzzle! So study up!! 500m erg test ⛓️ If you saw my last post, you would know I’m not able to row for the next couple of months.. good thing I still have some old erging content 🤳 I did this 500m test 2 weeks before breaking the old 1k world record. This was my first “formal”500m test in many years so I didn’t have much of a target or goal other than seeing what I was capable of Based on the 250m test I did a week or so before this, I figured I would be in the range of 1:14-1:15. So my pacing plan was to sit at 1:14 after a start and hold on On the day the warm up felt a little heavy and sluggish compared to my other sprint sessions. As a result, I thought maybe holding 1:15 was a smarter choice I got halfway through and it wasn’t feeling as hard as I expected so I was able to push on and actually go faster in second half (probably not the best way to pace a 500m) Reflecting on that now, it’s another good lesson (one I keep learning) to not always listen to your body in the warm up (don’t ignore massive warning signs though). Those feelings of being sluggish and slow weren’t real, I should have ignored them and stuck with my plan I think if I committed to more of an aggressive pacing strategy I could have gone .5-.8 seconds faster. But hey who cares unless you do it right? Lesson learnt Also random data, I went about 5 splits slower over 500m compared to 250m, and then 5 splits slower over 1k compared to 500m. This 500m was actually the reason why I thought a 1:19 1k was possible for me, it was fun putting that theory to the test!
