WIComing up in two weeks! 🐋 💥
Fifty-four years ago, on November 12, 1970, the Oregon Department of Transportation, after consulting the U.S. Navy, decided to remove a long-deceased Pacific gray whale from the beach using dynamite.
When the giant mammal washed ashore south of Florence, it was already dead, and its arrival drew crowds of curious onlookers. Officials worried that someone might climb on it and fall into the rotting carcass. The smell was unbearable.
They didn’t want to bury it, fearing it would resurface later. They didn’t want to cut it into pieces because—well, no one wanted that job.
So dynamite it was. The plan was to blow the whale into small bits that seagulls could eat.
Instead, huge chunks of blubber rained down on the crowd that had gathered that day. No one was hurt, though a car was crushed by flying whale fat. The remaining pieces had to be collected and buried afterward.
The explosion became a legendary learning experience, and policies have changed ever since.
🐳 Florence, Oregon, now has a park named after this infamous event. “Exploding Whale Memorial Park” overlooks the Siuslaw River and the beautiful Siuslaw River Bridge.
(And fun fact — the exploding whale beach is where I got married, though I didn’t know it at the time. Boom.)

THIn a touching tribute to Oregon’s most explosive historical moment, city officials unveiled a life-sized statue of the infamous exploding whale yesterday — then immediately blew it up for “historical accuracy.”
The fiberglass whale stood proudly for fourteen minutes before being vaporized by twenty cases of surplus dynamite. Officials called the detonation “a beautiful reminder of what happens when Oregonians get creative without adult supervision.”
Mayor Tina McSandals praised the event as “a powerful act of heritage,” adding, “In Florence, we don’t just honor history — we detonate it.”
