If you ever face a question that focuses on something you’d rather not disclose, but you don’t want to make the interview awkward. I talked about how abstract thinking emerges in adolescence in my previous video. In this video, I want to show another case of how a teenager can extrapolate a seemingly neutral hypothetical situation to make a social commentary and to imagine the profound impact it can have on the world. This thinking is important because it marks the transition from ‘what is’ to ‘what if.’ A younger child might focus on the immediate, physical frustration, not being able to write or play a game. But a teenager using abstract reasoning goes deeper. They now see beyond a missing digit. They see a complete restructuring of human civilization. Because abstract thinking is still new and exciting, adolescents love to take it out for a test drive. A lot! This can come across as argumentative or oppositional, especially as they begin questioning and debating the status quo. So the next time a teenager seems to be making “an argument out of thin air,” it may be their mind practicing a powerful new way of thinking. #goodenoughpsychiatrist #mentalhealth #childdevelopment #psychology
