It’s completely understandable for new clients (or parents) to want clarity right away—like a diagnosis or a detailed plan after the first session. When something’s been hard for a while, you want to know what’s going on and how to fix it. But in reality, it takes more than one session to really understand someone. We’re still building trust, gathering context, and getting a feel for what’s actually going on beneath the surface. A rushed diagnosis doesn’t help anyone—and in some cases, it can be inaccurate or even harmful. This is one reason many therapists choose not to take insurance. Most insurance companies require a formal diagnosis after session one, which doesn’t always align with how therapy actually works—or what’s clinically ethical. So if you’ve left a first session without all the answers, it ‘s not a sign something’s wrong.
