In the year of our lord 2016, Stranger Things single-handedly tricked us into caring about Dungeons and Dragons and buying Eggos and made us all wish we were born in 1983. But that Stranger Things died in season 2.
‘So what happened to Stranger Things between the beginning and the end of the show?’ you ask. Well, I don’t know about season 5 because it hasn’t come out yet. But I argue that, between season 1 and season 4, it was flanderized.
Flanderization is often used as a derogatory term. It signals laziness on the part of the writers. And while I usually agree with that, like in the case of The Simpsons, I think it turned Stranger Things into the worst version of itself in season 3 but also led to its redemption in season 4.

In honor of our Kickstarter launching, we decided it would be fun to start telling you some of the real behind the scenes moments of Journey to the Quest. It's not easy to make an animated DnD show on the internet, but we somehow managed to get this far. Now you get to see all of our comedic mistakes along the way. Sometimes, we even had good ideas. Sometimes in long-running Disney Channel and Nickelodeon shows, characters can start to “lose their excitement” or depth over time. This is often linked to a trope called flanderization, where a character’s main trait becomes exaggerated while other parts of their personality fade.
For example, a balanced, relatable character might slowly turn into a more over-the-top or one-dimensional version of themselves—becoming louder, sillier, or more exaggerated just for laughs. This can make later seasons feel different from the earlier ones.
It usually happens because writers lean into what audiences find funny or memorable, but over time it can reduce the originality or realism of the character. That shift is why some people feel earlier seasons of shows had more “authentic” energy compared to later ones
