Let me break it down, in the Estonian context: ✨ Think of it this way: A pathologist spends about 90% of their time at the microscope and 10% on autopsies. For a forensic doctor, it’s the opposite. Maybe a brutal explanation, but it helps people understand! ✨ Cause of ☠️ determines who’s involved: If it’s due to an illness, unknown reasons, or concerns a newborn (specific age/weight criteria), it’s the pathologist’s case. If violence is suspected or the cause is external (e.g., accidents, lightning), it’s for the forensic doctor. ✨ Work settings: Pathologists are based in hospitals and work closely with other doctors. Forensic doctors work for the Estonian Forensic Science Institute and collaborate with the police. ✨ Residency training: Both specializations require 4 years of residency. Pathology focuses on histology (the study of tissues). Forensic science focuses on autopsies. ✨ Working abroad: For pathologists, it’s possible. Digital pathology has made international work more accessible. For forensic doctors, it’s rare.
