JAThis week one of my reels did really well which brought in lots of questions about how I sew so I thought I’d share my top tips for free motion embroidery with you.
Darning foot - this is the presser foot I’m using on my videos, it allows the fabric to glide. Depending on your machine manufacturer they might look a bit different.
Feed dogs - you’ll need to drop these (these are the teeth that move fabric forward)
Pick a straight stitch, there’s no need for anything fancier than this.
Have plenty of spare needles on hand as you’re bound to snap lots of them when you’re leaning.
Use a good quality thread, cheap thread doesn’t cut it for free motion embroidery.
You’ll need to stabilise your fabric, use a stabiliser, batting or thick felt. It won’t work if you try on thin cottons.
Sharp embroidery scissors are a must for trimming threads and knots!
Patience, don’t try anything fancy at first just try writing your name to get you started.
