CRAs a ba'al teshuva, everything I ever took on I did slow, like super slow, like years to fully keep tznious, years to fully keep kosher, etc. so when I got married, jumping right into full hair covering, was really difficult.
I was so scared and also sad about needing to cover my hair. Scared that it would ruin my hair, sad because in a way it felt like I was losing my hair, and hard because I kind of had to jump right into the deep end. Sure, I could have taken it slowly in a sense, but when you live in a certain community and you align with a certain hashgafa, it doesnt really make sense to not do it all the way.
Now that I've been married, and been covering my hair, for 8 months I realize that there is a wisdom in it that isnt understood until you do it. Yes I learned the halachas, the reasons we cover our hair, the beauty behind it blah blah. But until actually doing it, you dont feel how it really makes you feel like a married woman.
Our hair is so important to us and our identities as women, but marriage and being a wife is also so important, so somehow hair covering is almost the only way to really remind ourselves of this hugely important role and responsibility we now have.
It's impossible to forget that I'm wearing a wig on my head, just like how we should never forget the importance of being a wife and what that means.
Is hair covering still hard and annoying in a lot of ways? Yes, but I wouldn't go back 🩷
