HOThere’s a moment on a build where you realise
you might have made a very expensive assumption.
It’s the special kind of delusion that sounds like:
“We’ll be fine.”
£3,340 gone.
On groundworks alone.
No concrete.
No blocks.
Just digging holes and getting rid of soil.
We started with £15k in savings to build what builders priced at ~£100k.
So watching over a fifth of that disappear before anything existed was… well, a massive oh sht* moment.
This was also when it hit us:
people pay professionals a fortune
because the consequences are brutal if you get it wrong.
At this point there’s no pausing, no “let’s rethink this”, no exit plan.
We cut everything else back, continued to save hard, scraped another £500 into the pot,
and kept going.
Quietly hoping that the saying about
“30–50% of the budget going into the ground”
is actually is not just some delusional fantasy people tell themselves because, like us, they’ve overspent on day 1 👀
👉 If you’re new here:
we couldn’t afford a £100k extension, so we’re building it ourselves. I’m sharing the real costs (minus labour), mistakes made and shits and giggles along the way.
👉Save this if you’re planning an extension, or send it to someone who is, so that you go into it with your eyes open rather than with the blissful ignorance that we did, only to have it come back and bite you - repeatedly - in the arse!

DRCross crawl movements are one of those things that look simple but matter a lot from a neurodevelopmental standpoint. You also wont believe how many children struggle with it.
It helps the right and left sides of the brain communicate, build coordination, and lay the groundwork for things like attention and body awareness. This is one of the foundations we address before looking at higher level skills.
When a child struggles with cross body movements or avoids them altogether then things like focus, emotional regulation, handwriting, and learning new skills feel harder than they should. The good news is this is a foundation that can be trained simply by doing the exercise.
