A curated short list of essentials I’d prioritize for an ACL/meniscus injury 😬 If you’ve ever had knee buckling, a meniscus tear, ACL sprain or any combination + knee pain - OR want to try and avoid them, this is for you. The marvelously intricate KNEE joint’s stability is maintained by bone structure, inert tissue (ligaments/capsule), and other dynamic stabilizers. DYNAMIC stability is maintained by the muscles that cross the joint and have influence on it, like the hips, quads, hamstrings as well as the posteromedial/latearl capsular components and the IT band — how well your knee stays together with the help of structures that move it. Injuries to the ACL, MCL, PCL and meniscus tears may result from trauma but may also occur from non contact mechanisms like cutting, twisting jumping, and sudden deceleration. If one of these does go, one may complain of major swelling (within 2 hours) after injury and a “pop” at the time it happened. Evaluation by radiograph and imaging are important to assess the integrity of the joint after the fact. Those with more chronic instability may experience clicking, catching, or the knee “giving out” especially with twisting. 👉🏼 You should be able to control ALL your knee extension WELL, stand one one leg, perform some degree of a squat, and load the quads while staying balanced for basic knee function. ‼️Truth is that most people think stretching is the answer to hip tightness…..& while that may make things feel better temporarily, the absolute best thing you can do for your hips is to strengthen them in their full range of motion Which works on mobility and strength simultaneously!!!!!!! 🤯 ↪️So what’s the alternative to stretching? 🔴Learning to control the hip flexors through various ranges of motion has been known to reduce the feeling of perceived tightness. 🔴These exercises challenge the hip flexors in multiple ways -isometrically, eccentrically and concentrically. 1️⃣ Standing HF Lifts 2️⃣ Reverse Plank + HF March 3️⃣ Plate Tuck Ups 4️⃣ Hip Flexor Hurdles 🔴These are challenging exercises but I believe adding some of these to your workout routine will end up being way more beneficial than just stretching/foam rolling/ball smashing your hip flexors. Leg lifts are one way of doing it and yes they are difficult 🥵so start with a standing variation and work your way to seated.
