THMy name is Ina Chung, and I am a mother to a neurodivergent 8-year-old and a 5-year-old with multiple food allergies.
With this #100thdayofschool trend, just... WHY. There are so many reasons against it: It’s ageist, it’s not inclusive for those without means to buy costumes and props, it’s not inclusive for many of our neurodivergent students, including those with sensory differences.
And it doesn’t really teach anything? There are so many better, more inclusive, ways to teach the concept of 100.
Nevertheless, my son’s teacher two years ago decided to go with this theme, and I allowed my son to opt out. He was not interested, and I didn’t blame him. I honestly could not explain the value of this activity, so we had him participate in a way that honored his strengths: with math. #hypernumeracy #hyperlexic #autistic

ALHypernumeracy is so fascinating! I work with a number (no pun intended 🙄) of children who have this amazing interest in numbers. The little boy in these clips is 2 years and 4 months old. He does not speak, but he has recently shown a marked interest in numbers, so I took along my sparkly numbers from @tickit_education and just let him explore.
Imagine our excitement when he independently sorted and organised the numbers from 0-9! 🥳
It got better!! He picked up the number 8 and I said “eight” to which he replied “eight”. 🤩
Further into the session, we sang ‘5 little ducks’ and he selected the right number of tiny ducks to hold in his hand for each verse.
So many exciting moments in that session, and many happy tears from Mummy! This is just the beginning 🥰
