Auto-refractor: What does it do? As you look inside, towards the house at the end (or the classic hot air balloon), the auto refractor shines light into your eye, measuring how it bounces off the back of the eye. While the image is blurring in and out, it’s figuring out when your eye is best focused and gives your optometrist an estimate of your myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. Are you farsighted?? Did you know that farsightedness, or hyperopia, doesn’t always mean you can see far and up close is blurred? It’s kind of a misnomer. For people who are hyperopic - some *might* be able to see distance objects clearly. But there are many for whom both distance and near objects are not clear. This happens because the light gets focused behind the retina instead of on it. This could be because you could have shorter than average eye or the front part of your eye, the cornea, which helps bend light is too flat and so light doesn’t get bent enough. Most kids are farsightedness because their eyeballs are short. Does that mean they all need glasses? Nope! Kids have a really elastic lens so that the lens can help focus up to +8 to +10 diopters. That means their vision is not blurred. That’s why your child’s eye doctor might tell you that your child’s hyperopia, or farsightedness is normal and doesn’t require glasses. As kids grow, their eye ball also grows and most will outgrow their hyperopia. Some adults might have hyperopia and distance objects are clear, but they have to focus hard to see near (and even far) clearly. This can result in headaches and eye strain. This is different from presbyopia which what happens when you need reading glasses past the age of 40. If you are nearsighted, close objects appear clear, but objects in the distance become blurry. Reading your phone is fine, but road signs or faces across the room are a struggle. If you are farsighted, it is the opposite. Distant objects may look clear, but close-up tasks like reading or screen time cause strain, blurring, and tired eyes faster than they should. Both conditions happen because of the way light focuses inside your eye, and both are far more manageable when caught early. بُعد البصر (Hyperopia) يكون منتشر اكثر لدى أغلب الأطفال بسبب عدم اكتمال نمو كرة العين عند الولادة، إذ تكون العين أصغر حجمًا مقارنةً بعين البالغ. هذا الصِغر يؤدي إلى قِصر المحور الأمامي-الخلفي للعين (Axial Length)، مما يسبب عدم توافق بين القوة الانكسارية للعين وطولها المحوري. ونتيجة لذلك تتجمع الأشعة الضوئية خلف الشبكية (Behind the Retina) بدلًا من تركّزها عليها مباشرة. يُعرف هذا الخلل باسم بُعد البصر المحوري (Axial Hyperopia). ومع تقدم العمر يحدث نمو تدريجي لكرة العين وزيادة في طول المحور الأمامي-الخلفي، وهي عملية تُعرف باسم التكيّف الانكساري أو التسوية الانكسارية (Emmetropization)، مما يؤدي إلى تحسّن الوضع الانكساري للعين واقتراب الصورة من الشبكية. لذلك يُعد بُعد البصر في مرحلة الطفولة حالة فسيولوجية شائعة وغالبًا ما تتراجع مع اكتمال نمو العين. #optometrist #opthandmade #optica #optoutside #بصريات #optometry #opthalmology #opto
