If your job keeps you in the air, where you live matters more than people realize and the DMV is quietly one of the best-positioned places in the country.
Three airports. DCA, IAD, BWI. All within reach. And because Washington DC is literally the seat of American power, the route maps are stacked. Direct flights to cities that smaller markets can’t dream of (truly I have flown direct to Ethiopia and Egypt)
Don’t come at me with JFK, EWR, or LGA. Having options doesn’t count when every option is a headache. 😭

JO➡️✈️ Move over, BWI, DCA, & IAD — a 4th airport will soon offer commercial flights to/from the DC region. Manassas Regional Airport (HEF) — which will soon be officially renamed to ‘Washington Manassas Airport — is set to start offering scheduled airline service at some point in 2027. Carriers and routes have not been revealed — but I’m told to expect, at the beginning, ~2-3 flights each day… primarily to leisure destinations along the East Coast. Let me know your thoughts! Are you excited that another airport in the DC area will offer airline service? Which airlines/routes should be available from Manassas?

DUDMV Airport Delays Are Hitting Hard
What DCA IAD And BWI Travelers Need To Know
The old two hour airport routine is getting wrecked across the DMV.
The real story is bigger than one bad line. TSA staffing has been strained by the DHS funding lapse, and Washington area airports also got slammed Friday night when the Potomac air traffic control facility in Warrenton had another emergency that triggered ground stops across the region.
If you are flying out of DCA, Dulles, or BWI, do not treat this like a normal spring break travel day.
BWI had some of the worst backups of the weekend and told travelers to arrive up to four hours early at the peak. By Monday things were improving, but officials were still warning people to give themselves extra time. BWI is still telling many passengers to arrive about three hours early.
At Dulles, the airport’s normal official guidance is still two hours for domestic and three hours for international flights. If you are flying international, especially with checked bags, build in more cushion than usual and reserve parking before you go.
One more thing people should know. ICE personnel were deployed at BWI to support checkpoint operations, but airport officials said TSA is still handling passenger and bag screening. And for international arrivals, the Mobile Passport Control app from U.S. Customs and Border Protection is a real shortcut worth downloading before you land.
This is one of those moments where being “usually early” may not be enough.

In a statement to News4, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said, “The Airports Authority appreciates the administration’s interest in making improvements to Washington Dulles International Airport. We look forward to seeing the results of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s request for information and working collaboratively with the administration. We always embrace new ideas for Dulles, which is the fastest growing international gateway airport in America (year-over-year through September YTD). We want to build on the existing $7 billion capital plan for Dulles, which is underway with a new concourse under construction and expected to open next fall.”
