Q & A // Can non-Indigenous people wear Indigenous beadwork? Yes! My Indigenous beadwork specifically? Yes! The majority of artisans invite you to purchase our work, so don't hesitate to support us! ✶ It is always important to treat these pieces with the respect they deserve and to avoid buying pieces or entering draws that the artist has noted are for Indigenous kin only. ✶ And as always, it is critical to buy Indigenous Made, not Indigenous Inspired- one is good allyship, the other is harmful. ✶ h i y h i y / / m a a r s i i ⁣ #abmetis #beading #beadedearrings #beadedjewellery #beadingmedicine #beadingismedicine #beadwork #bolo #bolotie #calgary #cree #earrings #indigenous #indigenousartists #indigenousfashion #lgbtq2S #metis #moosehide #nativefashion #nehiyaw #powwow #powwowbling #pride #twospirit

Real truths about Indigenous beadwork that don’t get said enough… ✨️ It’s Sacred. Even When It’s Sold. Selling beadwork doesn’t make it less sacred. Supporting Indigenous artists means participating in living culture not consuming a trend. ✨️ It’s Not Just a Hobby It’s Survival For many, beadwork isn’t a side hobby. It’s a livelihood, a decolonial act, and a way to support families, communities, and cultural resilience. ✨️ Not Everyone Deserves It Not every customer is ready to honor the weight and meaning of beadwork. Boundaries matter, whether it’s about custom requests, underpricing, or cultural appropriation. ✨️ It’s Expensive Because It Should Be Beads, hides, sinew, and high-quality materials are costly. Add hours (sometimes days) of painstaking work. Pricing isn't just for the item; it's respect for the skill, knowledge, and labor. ✨️ It’s Generational Wealth in Action Beadwork skills are a form of wealth. When we pass it down, we’re giving our children a legacy of creativity, self-sufficiency, and cultural pride. ✨ Beadwork is a love letter to our people. Past, present, and future. ✨ If you own beadwork, wear it with pride. If you make beadwork, know that what you do matters more than words can ever say. #IndigenousMade #BeadworkIsMedicine #IndigenousArtist #SupportIndigenousArtists #NorthernStyle #BeadworkIsArt #EarringsAreTheOutfit #CultureIsNotACommodity

🤔 but WHO are THEY?!⁉️ How satisfying is it when each stitch seems to be going your way?? 🥰 To keep each stitch smooth and manageable, I always make sure to have my thread conditioned! Conditioning your thread also has the long term effect of maintaining the integrity of the piece! I find it also means less thread snapping mid-stitch, the most annoying thing!!😅 I use beeswax to condition my thread :) For indigenous beadwork, there is the addition of beads between each sewn stitch. This can make things complicated, the beads can get bunched and the thread can become twisted. Conditioning helps this, but patience and practice are some of your most important tools in your beading tool kit! I handmade these beaded bleeding heart earrings (say that 5 times fast). Being handsewn means that no two pieces are exactly alike! That means that indigenous beadwork, is unique, one of a kind, wearable art! Indigenous beadwork is also slow fashion! That also means supporting local indigenous artists and crafters, is both supporting small business and boosting local economy! Plus, it is a great way to build community and connection :) if you’ve read this far, tell me what you most satisfying moment in sewing is!! ✨🥰 🌸🌸🌸 #handmade #sewing #satisfying #indigenousbeadwork

Lots of new people have joined since the last time I explained this so let’s refresh! The spirit bead is a tradition among Indigenous beaders to remind us that nothing human is perfect. It’s also meant to keep us humble — knowing and accepting our flaws. The cool thing about the spirit bead is that it’s almost impossible to find once the piece is complete. The small imperfections get lost in the beauty of the whole. I’ve started adding “spirit” to the beginning of my mistakes in other areas of my life too. Sometimes it’s important to extend grace and say “it’s just not that serious.” And yes, the shrimp queen is beaded with 24kt gold. She’ll be available in a waffle very soon 😎

Celebrating “A Seat for Every Story” Today, the Pinkham School had the incredible honour of unveiling artwork that celebrates Black educators during #BlackHistoryMonth 🖤. At the heart of this piece is the asedwa, a traditional Ghanaian stool symbolizing leadership, wisdom, and belonging. It proudly carries the names of Black school educators and staff who have made a difference in countless students’ lives. The African woman gracefully balancing the stool represents the strength and grace it takes to lift others up. Her attire features beautiful patterns created by Pinkham’s Grade 5/6 students, including Indigenous beadwork that symbolizes positive relationships between communities. This is a living artwork, where each year, more names will be added to honour even more amazing educators who create spaces where every story matters. The piece will also include quotes from students about how the school has positively shaped their lives, acknowledging Black educational leadership while celebrating student and staff diversity. - Diversity matters. - Representation matters. - Care matters. To all honourees—past, present, and future: Your dedication is honoured, and the Winnipeg School Division stands in appreciation. #WinnipegSD #Students #ILoveToRead #BlackHistoryMonth #Education #Representation #WinnipegArt #Community #Diversity #BlackEducators #AsedwaStool #GhanaianCulture #IndigenousAllies #StudentArt
