This is called building conceptual understanding towards a procedure that works every time. Sometimes that procedure is the one we’re used to and sometimes it is different but all math is so cool. Don’t get me wrong, it saves SO much class time to just SHOW them HOW to do it…. But sometimes that wastes more time in the long run because they’re not understanding WHY it is happening. Therefore, there is less of a chance for retention, causing endless re-teaching/vent sessions with your math besties that they don’t get it. 🙈😤😡 #mathteacher #teachersfollowingteachers #teachingstrategies

I have a deeper understanding of the way students are thinking, which is much more impactful than a polished lesson plan. Anticipating how students will think and solve is the third step of my “7 Steps to Get Students Talking More in Math Class” because it is absolutely crucial. I’m 100% guilty of feeding into the idea that the “stuff” we use to provide instruction is the most important. As a tpt “seller”, I do share resources I’ve used with my students that have been successful, but structure & strategies are a HUGE part of why and I wish more teacher influencers talked about it. You can have the “best” curriculum or activity, but if the delivery is not strong, it doesn’t matter.❌ This is your reminder to remember to stay focused on the strategies and basics that impact students learning. As someone who LOVES engaging activities, it’s important to remember that those are the icing, not the whole cake. 🎂 #teacher #teacherreels #mathteacher #middleschoolteacher #teacherlife
