I made multiple attempts to see an artist I deeply admire, @orvillepeck — and kept walking away disappointed. Most of it was just bad luck. But one part of the experience actually gave me information I could use. As a scientist, I try to ask after any bad outcome: Is there something here I should change… or is this just randomness? This time, there was a real lesson. And there’s something quietly poetic about learning about masks from a performer who always wears one. This is stupid. I'll never be able to do that. When I was writing my play and that Voice showed up every single day when i sat down at the computer to write. I don't know about you, but whenever something gets a little hard or there's a bump on the road a little insecure gay kid starts running the show (or whatever version you have 😂) He has zero confidence, doesn't trust my creativity or my brilliance. But when I catch him, I asked myself... Who's the adult here? How hard can it be? And I jump back in. I am so proud of the piece my play turned into. And that voice has a little less power. What makes this clip better is knowing what was happening off camera. I found out later that Mike, our director, was arguing with the field producer, who wanted to stop this scene. She felt that I was pressuring Jean François to chug the Champagne. (To be clear, I was) When Mike asked her why she wanted to stop it, she said, “That’s not what the show’s about.” Mike’s response was “That’s exactly what the show is about.” She didn’t see the show as comedic. She saw it as a conduit for information. Mike and I, thank God, disagreed. She was replaced with Christina for all future episodes, and the rest is history. Mike and I understood that the show was entertainment first. The education was snuck in. If viewers learned something, fantastic. If they laughed while learning it, even better. What we ended up with was a show that was fun, funny, and truly authentic. We never tried to be anything that we weren’t. I wasn’t an expert. I was there to soak (and drink) it all in. The education was a byproduct of the show. In the end, the most valuable lesson I learned about Champagne had nothing to do with terroir, méthode champenoise, or proper glassware. It was far simpler and far more universal. If you drink enough of it, you will absolutely get a hangover… no matter what you paid for the bottle.
