Carpet python positions a dead possum for optimal feasting
You would think with a name like carpet python that these snakes would love to be on the ground, but it's quite the opposite. They are very comfortable in trees, they just love it up there! They also seem to do alright hunting from up above. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve seen many examples of them hunting anywhere else. That’s when I looked into it.
The name “carpet python” is purely about their looks. Their scale patterns are incredibly intricate and variegated (this means patchy with lots of different colours mixed together) - browns, creams, blacks, yellows, sometimes almost gold - and early naturalists thought they looked exactly like woven oriental carpets or Persian rugs. Nothing to do with actual carpets on floors; it was just the most accurate description they could come up with.

Beautiful carpet Python relocated from a property in Mountain creek. While carpet pythons generally don’t cause any problems, if there are small pets around it is often better to remove the snake to prevent any unwanted interactions.

If you’re there at the right time of year, in the right place, you’re almost guaranteed to encounter several of these incredible and unique snakes.
This was a true childhood dream species for us — something we had wanted to see for a very, very long time.
Yellow Pythons are fascinating hunters. As juveniles, in their bright yellow phase, they’re primarily diurnal — actively stalking skinks and other daytime reptiles. As they mature and transition from yellow to green, their behaviour shifts too. They become largely nocturnal, focusing more on mammals (and likely birds as well).
When they’re not hunting, they spend most of their time high in the canopy, descending only to ambush prey — during the day or night, depending on their life stage.
An unforgettable species and one we’ll never get tired of encountering.

LIA few weeks back a concerned neighbour brought a carpet python to me, they thought it could be an escaped pet.
Most people don’t know we actually have a few wild pockets of carpets locally.
If you spot one, enjoy it from a distance and please don’t touch it. People often mix up pythons and venomous snakes, and that can end badly.
This is one of many reasons our bushy coastal strips matter. The wildlife that lived here long before us still needs somewhere to move, hunt, and survive for a little bit longer. ❤️

As Kyle said in the last post, we not only surpassed our record of 131 python eggs removed, but we more than TRIPLED our efforts from last year!! Which is so rewarding for us considering the literal years of research, time, energy, blood and sweat we’ve put into figuring this out. We feel strongly that this strategy is especially effective in managing these invasive species. To put it into perspective, the amount of eggs we removed this season is more than the amount of pythons we’ve removed over 5 years.
