But it was in the pubs of England, with his incredible backing band The Grease Band, that he discovered his raw, soulful voice. In November 1968, his cover of The Beatles’ “A Little Help from My Friends” hit #1 in the UK. Then came Woodstock in August 1969 — and that performance changed everything. 🎶✌️ Two gold albums followed (With a Little Help from My Friends and Joe Cocker!), and in 1970, his take on “The Letter” became his first US Top 10 hit. The peak? The legendary Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour in 1970 — over 40 people on stage, a third gold album, and a concert film. Later struggles with alcohol took a toll on his voice, but that Woodstock moment?
