John Cornyn (R-TX) thanked his supporters after advancing to a runoff in the Republican primary for Texas’s U.S. Senate race and criticized his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), who he will face again in May. “I’ve worked for decades to build the Republican Party, both here in Texas and nationally. A Senate Judiciary Committee meeting on Thursday got tense after Chair Dick Durbin (D-IL) denied Republicans the opportunity to speak on two nominees the panel was considering. “Congratulations on destroying the United States Senate Judiciary Committee,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) told the chair after he pushed forward with a roll call vote over the objections of Republican senators. Chair Durbin said committee members previously had two opportunities to speak on the nominees, but traditionally, broad deference is afforded in the Senate to members who wish to speak on a matter. “You’re gonna have a lot of consequences coming if you go down this road,” warned Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR). “You better believe it,” added Ranking Member Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Underlying the exchange was Republicans’ opposition to voting to subpoena GOP donor Harlan Crow and judicial activist Leonard Leo as part of the panel’s investigation into alleged ethical lapses by Supreme Court justices. The committee later voted to approve those subpoenas with Republicans boycotting the vote after they were denied the opportunity to vote on amendments to those subpoenas. Republicans had intended to force votes on 177 amendments, which would have taken hours to go through. WATCH: Following his 13-month investigation into the abuse and neglect of children in Georgia’s foster care system, Sen. Ossoff is introducing bipartisan legislation alongside Sen. @johncornyn to strengthen oversight of State foster care systems. Earlier this year, Sen. Ossoff released his Subcommittee’s 64-page report from a 13-month investigation into safety of foster children, uncovering abuse & neglect of vulnerable children in Georgia, including incidents with “hidden foster care” placements. Sen. Ossoff’s Foster Care Placement Transparency Act would require State foster care agencies to report to HHS incidents in which children are separated from their parents and placed with a caregiver informally, to help ensure their wellbeing and safety.
