Tips for knitting colorwork⬇️ 1) Don’t let your stitches bunch up on your needles. Right before you change colors, spread the stitches out that are on your needles. This will help create even floats! 2) Color dominance does make a difference to the stitch definition. Make sure that your main color floats pass over the top of the contrast color floats. To help keep track, knit in English style for the main color and continental style for the contrast color. 3) Swatch and block before starting the project. Your tension will likely differ quite a bit from your usual tension when knitting colorwork so make sure to check your gauge. This will also allow you to figure out if the colors will bleed at all. It’s much better to find out from a swatch than a sweater. Update // The Darling Sweater pattern is out now! I was genuinely scared of knitting with two colors. It just looked… complicated. Like something “real” knitters could do - not me. The first time I tried, I failed. My tension was off, it felt messy, and I convinced myself that colorwork just wasn’t for me. But the truth is - it wasn’t me. It was the way I was trying to learn it. That’s exactly why Elisabeth and I created the Easy Colour Mix Sweater. We wanted other knitters to experience success the first time they knit with two colors. Not frustration. Not confusion. Not giving up halfway through. So we designed a sweater that actually teaches you how to knit with two colors - with beginner-friendly techniques and video guidance built right into the pattern, so you’re never left guessing. Because learning something new in knitting shouldn’t feel overwhelming. It should feel empowering. And yes - you absolutely can do this 🧶 comment “mix” to get the pattern link sent #knit #strik #colorwork #knittersgonnaknit

New knitter! Stop! Don’t start your first knitting project until you read this👇🏼 1. Pick a color you’re obsessed with. Frog green? Dusty pink? Deep bordeaux? Go bold. If it makes you happy, you’ll finish it. 2. Choose chunky yarn and 6–8 mm needles. Big stitches = quick wins. 3. Learn one single move: the knit stitch. Knit in the round. No purls, no patterns, no drama (yet). 4. Keep it small: neckwarmers, headbands, dishcloths. Save the sweater dream for later. 5. YouTube is your new knitting BFF. Watch, pause, slow down, repeat. 6. Forget perfect. Your first project will be wobbly. That’s the point. My first? A fluffy disaster. Loved it anyway. Old knitter? Great. What was your first knitted project? I wish this resource existed when I learned to knit 📃 I think it's important to clarify that I am in no way saying people shouldn't knit from patterns, or that you're "not a good knitter" if you only knit from patterns. Patterns are a wonderful way for one person to share their idea with another person and I use and create them all the time! Designing isn't everyone's jam, but all of us have personal preferences, and most of us are constantly making tweaks without even realizing it. One of the best things about making things is the ability to customize and make it your own. And to do that you need more context than what you get by blindly following a pattern! I'm working hard on some resources that are designed to give knitters more agency over what they're knitting, and this guide is the first of them. I really hope it helps! Just comment the word "guide" for the link or use the link in my bio:)

This video popped up in my memories from a year ago… This was my first completed draft. At this time last year, I had been hustling hard knitting hundreds of hats over the winter. This had been my grind for the past four years. Every spare second I had I was knitting hats to sell. Now I had 2 small kids and knew that something needed to change - because I wanted to be a more present mother and I knew there was more to life than knitting hats. I had published a few chunky beanie patterns through the years, very low key, and every once in a while I would get a sale. When I started knitting 6 years ago, making a sweater seemed like the pinnacle of creation- something I would aspire my whole life to accomplish. Maybe … MAYBE someday I would be able to knit one. But then … I had an idea. What if I, a “beginner” knitter, designed a pattern that other “beginner” knitters could understand? Design a sweater with super bulky yarn that knits up fast, has simple and straightforward construction, but also is cute enough for people to actually wear? To build my confidence and conquer the mountain of “my first sweater”? And so, having absolutely no idea how to do it, I started to dream up this sweater. I pushed myself so sooo far out of my comfort zone - grading the pattern for different sizes was very new to me and was super intimidating. With the help of some gracious test knitters, we sorted everything out and the Pines Pullover was born. I’ve sold hundreds and hundreds of copies of this pattern. I designed the children’s version (Lil Pines Pullover) and have since then published a lighter weight version. It was a window from Heaven telling me that I could legit design patterns. And have a successful business from it. And my days of cranking out beanies is over. This pattern has been a blessing, and I am very very excited for my future. One that I can be more free to be the best mom-knitter-athlete-adventurer-musician-and overall creator. Pattern designing has been an unexpected turn in my life, but we’re rolling with it and I can’t wait to show you what’s next ;) 🧶: @malabrigoyarn Rasta in Frank Ochre Pattern: Pines Pullover on my Ravelry, Etsy & website

I’ll start! Don’t worry about holding yarn in both hands right away! Focus on tension by dropping the strand you’re not using and stick to your usual knitting style. I’ve made plenty of sweaters this way and eventually transitioned to holding one strand in each hand, but there’s no rush to learn a new knitting method just to do stranded colourwork. The key is to stretch out the stitches you’ve just knit before switching colours. This keeps the float at the back loose enough for stretch! 🧶✨ Hope that was helpful! And I hope there will be many more great tips in the comments! Music from #Uppbeat, https://uppbeat.io/t/justin-lee/wanderlust. License code: CNZVVAMAKM9XV5LZ

When I first started knitting, I cast on a lot of basic projects. Things that were easy to follow or seemed like a good beginner choice, but they weren’t really my style. I don’t wear most of those knits now. But I needed to make them to understand what I actually like. These days, I think of knitting as a form of art. I want the things I make to feel like pieces of wearable art that reflect who I am. Before I start something new, I picture it in my wardrobe. If I can imagine it working with lots of outfits, that usually tells me it's worth making. I've learned that I love fingering and lace weight yarns. Sometimes DK too, depending on the yarn. I’m drawn to clean, simple cables and lace that feels light and balanced. If a design feels too busy, I tend not to wear it. I also enjoy colorwork, especially when it’s minimal and fits within my usual palette. And if the pattern has flowers, I’m even more likely to wear it. I just really love flower motifs. #knittingcommunity #knittingideas #findyourstyle
