The Stone Crown on the Hill 🏰 High above the rolling hills stood a castle-like mansion carved from pale stone, its tall towers reaching confidently into the sky like guardians of a dream. Massive iron gates opened to a winding driveway lined with ancient oaks, leading visitors to towering wooden doors framed by arched windows and climbing ivy. Inside, grand halls echoed with quiet elegance—marble floors, sweeping staircases, and chandeliers glowing like constellations above. Every room held a view of the valley below, where golden sunsets poured through stained glass and painted the walls with warm light. But the true magic of the mansion was the feeling it carried. It wasn’t just a home—it was a fortress of ambition, a place where stories were written into every stone and every balcony overlooked a world of possibility. From the rooftop terrace, where the wind whispered across the towers, the mansion stood like a crown upon the land, reminding anyone who looked up that dreams built with patience and vision can rise as strong and timeless as a castle itself. 🏰✨ #castle #castlesofinstagram #castlesoftheworld #castlevania #castles

Carmichael House was a neoclassical mansion built in 1734 near Biggar in South Lanarkshire, serving as the historic seat of Clan Carmichael and the Earls of Hyndford. 🌷First floor tour of the Quarry House🌷 The Quarry House dates from 1850 and was built by the Ahern brothers, who had walked the entire way from Cork to seek their fortune. Owners of the limestone quarry opposite – from which the house takes its name – at the height of their business the pair employed up to 100 workers, who in turn were stonemasons on many of the local churches and as far afield as St Patrick’s College in Cavan. Quarry House self-catering accommodation is available for hire throughout the year. Arundel Castle is one of England's most iconic and complete medieval fortresses, standing proudly over the River Arun in West Sussex. It serves as the ancestral home of the Dukes of Norfolk, a lineage that has held the castle for over 850 years. If you’re planning a visit or just curious about its history, here is the breakdown of what makes it special. ## 🏰 Key Historical Highlights Norman Origins: Founded on Christmas Day in 1067 by Roger de Montgomery, a cousin of William the Conqueror. The Motte & Keep: The oldest part of the castle is the stone shell keep, built on an artificial mound (motte) that offers panoramic views of the South Downs. Civil War Scars: The castle was severely damaged during two sieges in the English Civil War (1640s) and sat in semi-ruin for years before major Victorian restoration. Victorian Grandeur: Much of what you see today is a "Gothic Revival" masterpiece, rebuilt in the late 19th century with then-modern luxuries like electricity and central heating #history #past #evolution #artworld #earth

This castle wasn’t destroyed by war… it was deliberately abandoned. Hidden on the edge of the Lake District, Lowther Castle looks like a medieval ruin — but it’s actually a Victorian powerhouse. Built between 1806–1814 for the Lowther family (later the Earls of Lonsdale), the castle was designed by architect Robert Smirke in a dramatic Gothic Revival style. It replaced an earlier house on the same site and symbolised immense wealth and political influence. So why is it roofless today? After the Second World War, crippling death duties and changing fortunes made it unsustainable. In 1957, much of the interior was stripped out and the roof removed to avoid taxation. The family essentially dismantled their own ancestral seat. For decades it stood as a romantic shell — nature reclaiming stone — until restoration of the gardens began in the early 2000s. Lowther isn’t a medieval ruin. It’s a monument to changing Britain. #englishheritage #lakedistrict #BritishHeritage #countryhouse #gothicrevival

If walls could talk, Muckross House would casually drop 1800s tea-time gossip with a side of royal drama 👑🌿 Built in 1843, this grand Victorian mansion sits in the heart of Killarney National Park and famously hosted Queen Victoria in 1861. Legend says the owners prepared for years for her visit… only to bankrupt themselves after. Moral of the story? Hosting royalty is expensive. The views, however, are priceless. Just steps away lie the haunting ruins of Muckross Abbey, founded in 1448. Despite centuries of conflict and damage, its cloisters still stand, wrapped around a breathtaking ancient yew tree that feels straight out of a fantasy film. And then… the gardens. 🌸 Perfectly manicured, colourful, peaceful, and somehow always photogenic. Here’s how to experience it properly 👇 📍 Muckross House • Tour the elegant period rooms and learn about 19th century aristocratic life • Step into the traditional farms nearby for a glimpse of rural Ireland • Grab a coffee at the café with garden views (they have fresh clotted cream with their scones) • Take the jaunting car ride if you want the full classic experience 📍 Muckross Abbey • Walk the cloister corridors for moody medieval vibes • Stand under the iconic central yew tree • Explore the old graveyard and stone archways • Go early or late for that soft, cinematic light 📍 Muckross Gardens • Wander the Sunken Garden for symmetrical perfection • Visit the Rock Garden for hidden pathways • Explore the Arboretum and spot exotic trees • Stroll down to the lake for peaceful water views Pro tip: Rent bikes and cycle the nearby lakeside paths. Pair it with Torc Waterfall and make a full day of it. #muckrosshouse #killarney #killarneynationalpark #Killarney #Visitireland #IrelandBucketList #KerryIreland #IrishGem #WildAtlanticWay #Explorelreland #irelandtravel #wildatlanticway #visitireland #disove rireland #failteireland #ringofkerry #killarneynationalpark #killarney #muckrosshouse #torcwaterfall #thegapofdunloe #visitireland #wanderireland #thriveinkerry

My favorite thing about the UK is @landmarktrust. This was my first visit to Cornwall and it was such a magical time! It was fun to see some familiar place names from where I grew up in Massachusetts like Falmouth and Truro. I think The Landmark Trust is such an important organization - they save historical buildings from falling into ruin and tastefully restore them using authentic and historic building methods into comfortable places to stay. Each one is unique and transports you into a different time and realm. I've been giving myself one day a week to go screen free - staying at one of their properties makes it easy, especially with all the books. I've never read a book as fast as I read Frenchman's Creek. If you're in the mood for a good period pirate romance book, it is a must read. If you've ever stayed at a Landmark property, let me know in the comments! This was our 6th Landmark stay 🤗 #historicalplace #cornwall #landmark #frenchmanscreek
