When he didn’t run from me, I thought this would be one of the easy ones — until it was time to get in the car. His growl wasn’t anger, it was fear. You can always tell the difference when you’ve done this long enough. So we took it slow. I sat there and talked to him, let him smell me, let him breathe. And after 20 minutes, he finally climbed in. But the hardest part came after that. Because even though I got him safe off the 138, I had nowhere to bring him. We’re full with large breed dogs, most doubled up already, and there’s no way to shift or move anyone to make space — because there isn’t any left. Taking a dog to the shelter when you’re a rescue is a heartbreak that’s hard to explain. It feels like failing them, even when you know you’re doing the only thing you can in that moment. It’ll buy me a little time, and I’ll keep an eye on him, and I’ll make a plan.That’s all we can do sometimes. Follow for more updates #dogs #rescue #rescue #fyp

🐾 New Arrivals 🐾 This past Monday, we welcomed 19 new dogs into our care. Some made the journey from our Dogsville location, while others were just rescued and are beginning their fresh start with us. Theresa is here today to introduce you to a few of these new faces and to talk about a growing challenge in the rescue community — the heartbreaking rise in large breed dogs being dumped and surrendered. Some of the dogs who just arrived will need time with our behavior team to rebuild trust and confidence. Others are facing more extensive medical needs that will require treatment and patience. But no matter their story, every single one will receive the care, love, and attention they need to heal and go on to live the life they’ve always deserved. ❤️ Most of these dogs are not available for adoption just yet as they settle in and receive care. Please keep an eye on our website for the most accurate and up-to-date information on when they become available. He’s had difficulty playing off lead with other pups as he’s so big so would you believe this is his first time!!!!!! What a great job he does!!!! He has a few power naps to rebuild his battery and off he goes!!! It’s a common issue for large breed dogs to struggle to have a safe space to play with others but it’s crucial they learn from a young age so they don’t become frustrated! Everyone needs a Walter in their life!! ❤️

Large breed dogs (55-88 lbs): Senior: 6-10 years old Geriatric: 10+ years old That means your 7-year-old Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, or Labrador is already in their senior years and should be getting senior-specific care. What this means for your large dog: 🐾 Senior wellness exams every 6 months instead of yearly - things change fast in aging pets 🐾 Bloodwork annually to catch issues like kidney disease, liver problems, or diabetes early 🐾 Joint support is essential - large dogs can be highly prone to arthritis, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia. Early intervention with supplements and pain management is key 🐾 Weight management becomes critical - extra weight puts significant stress on aging joints and organs in large dogs 🐾 Heart monitoring - large breeds are prone to heart conditions that develop with age 🐾 Diet adjustments - senior dogs may need higher quality protein to maintain muscle mass as they age 🐾 Mental stimulation - keeping their minds active helps prevent cognitive decline The goal isn’t to treat your 7-year-old large dog like they’re “old”.
