Grafting my gigantic , neglected Rubber Plant.
This was my very first attempt at grafting any plant. I actually did it to save my rubber plant, which had become badly root-bound at the bottom, based on my sister’s advice @hooks.kneedles . I went ahead with air layering (aerial grafting).
I had also successfully rooted the plant from a top cutting earlier, but my sister warned me that with such a big plant, an abrupt cut often leads to it dying—something she’s seen happen many times. So instead of risking it, I chose to root it first. To my surprise, it worked really well.
Initially, I was a little worried because I couldn’t tell if the roots had actually formed—I didn’t get the time to check properly. But as you can see now, the roots have developed very nicely, and the leaves on the top are doing fine. There are some new growth with some leaves drying.
For the top portion, I plan to plant it normally. The bottom i am going to turn it into a bonsai. I’m curious to see how to place the coiled roots in a shallow pot. Let’s see how that turns out. I’ll keep you updated 🌱
