Grades aren't linear 💥 Expecting linear progression is a road to frustration. Most of us learn this lesson when we hit our first big plateau, whether that's V2, V6 or V10. I stopped feeling "plateaued" as soon as I started thinking in terms of skills instead of thinking in terms of grades. Instead of feeling like I couldn't climb a certain grade, I realized that I just couldn't climb certain problems, and that those problems were made up of skills that I could practice. This isn't sexy or flashy, but it is the reality of climbing progression. The wheel analogy is a way to understand your climbing that's more detailed than just a grade label. I'm not suggesting everyone become a generalist. Skills are context- and terrain-specific, and if you want to succeed at your limit then you should of course pick a context you're experienced in. But if you do that all the time, you're gonna wind up with a bumpy ride when you go outside that comfort zone. Even for the most stubborn serial-project-climber, their hardest projects are going to have some minor skills that they can practice on easier terrain. Changing the context is a good way to find low hanging fruit for technical improvement. Thinking in skills is a good way to lower performance pressure.
