HEInstalling tension springs on a bicycle, like those on kickstands or brakes, can be a frustrating struggle because they are incredibly stiff. Trying to stretch them with pliers often leads to the tool slipping, which can scratch your bike's frame or result in a painful pinch to your fingers.
The trick is to use a few common coins or washers as "spacers" to pre-stretch the spring. Bend the spring slightly to open the coils, insert a coin, and repeat this down the length of the spring until it is long enough to slide easily onto its mounting hooks. Once in place, simply move the part or pull the coins out with pliers.

This eliminates the need for heavy pulling and prevents damage to your bike's finish. It makes the job easier by using simple physics to turn a high-tension task into a quick, no-strain fix.
