RI3 things I wish I knew before I became a freelance filmmaker
1) Pre-prep is everything
Organize in Milanote—even the free version works. List every location, every shot, every lens, all camera movements, lighting setups, angles, and even the emotions you want from your talent. The more detail you have before you step on set, the smoother it goes—and the less you have to improvise under pressure. You’ll know exactly what you need and when, so nothing gets missed.
2) Frame rates matter, a lot
You’ve done all this prep before shooting, so you know exactly what shots you need to slow down. Don’t shoot everything at 60fps “just in case.” Only the shots you actually plan to slow. Keep the rest at 24/30fps—the motion blur is unmatched and way more important than you realize.
3) Be realistic with editing/culling
Most shots only play for a few seconds. You can spend four hours filming and walk away with 15 seconds of high-quality footage. That’s just how it is—quality beats quantity every time.
