Another massive fire just ripped through several abandoned warehouses south of downtown, and just like clockwork, nobody seems to know how it started.
Flames shot up hundreds of feet into the air early Friday morning as firefighters fought what was eventually declared a six-alarm blaze. The fire broke out in the Crunden-Martin Warehouse complex near 2nd Street and Gratiot, a cluster of old buildings that hadn’t been in use for years.
Multiple structures collapsed. Smoke was seen from miles away. Videos show heavy damage, and crews were still on scene monitoring flare-ups long after the fire was contained.
And yet, with all that devastation the cause is “still under investigation.” That’s nothing new for St. Louis. Every time a vacant building catches fire, the story plays out the same way. There’s confusion, finger-pointing, and then silence. The blame almost always falls on the unhoused, with little to no evidence, while the deeper issue of neglect and systemic abandonment rarely gets addressed.
