KIGuess the job market isn't looking so good after all. This is how I felt when I thought I wouldn't find a job after getting my Masters Degree in Biology. Even after 2 years of doing research in the Everglades, publishing a paper and gaining the necessary skills as a scientist, I didn't land positions I interviewed for. SAHow to choose a graduate program in 5 steps 🤝
👉 Step 1. Figure out your area of specialty
You don’t need to do the same program as your undergrad or master’s, but do check the eligibility for admission before you apply.
This also ties into finding a research area you want to focus on. For example, once you know you want to go into clinical developmental psychology [area of specialty], you’d need to figure out your research area (perhaps you’re interested in youth and addiction, bullying in schools, etc.).
This will also narrow down your choices of programs and supervisors.
👉 Step 2. Choose a location
Country, province, city, etc. The deciding factors here may be: available funding, student loan eligibility, climate, culture, affordability, things to do, etc.
👉 Step 3. Gather potential schools/programs in an Excel spreadsheet
How I organized mine was:
🔹Column 1 - school name
🔹Column 2 - program name (because one school could have multiple programs of interest)
🔹Column 3 - Potential Supervisors & their Research Interests
🔹Column 4 - location
🔹Column 5 - tuition amount
🔹Column 6 - notes (specific pros/cons that either pulled me towards or away from the school)
👉 Step 4. Figure out your criteria
🌱Here are some criteria ideas to get you started:
research interest and match, supervisor working style, cohort friendliness, small/big school, available funding, co-op opportunity, employability, climate, culture, affordability, distance to your family/friends, program structure, professional/academic-based program…
👉 Step 5. Trim down schools/programs from there
