There are so many incredible artworks on view, but these two Dior gowns (one by Christian Dior and one by Yves Saint Laurent) took my breath away. The exhibit is open for member preview days now; it opens to the public starting March 15. Their union is fighting for them, but please see Ayia’s video (in my story & repost) for ways that you can speak out & support! 🥒 It's PICKLE TIME! Here's a closeup shot of my Pickle Bonnet that was finally finished after languishing in a basket for 5 years. The bonnet is based on an original corded bonnet from 1800-1815 in the collection at MFA Boston— It gets its structure from each of those cords in hand stitched channels and from a small buckram & wire bill to give it shape around the face. There is some tissue paper in the back to maintain some smoothness, otherwise it collapses around the hair and doesn't look as nice. The trim is two rows of box pleated fabric that has been manually dagged on the edges in deep V's. I really, really love how it turned out. It's silly, it's striking, it's unusual. I love Millinery, especially more cloth based items like caps and soft bonnets like this one... However I have no idea how many hours it took since it A) took forever when I did the cording and B) the cording was all done about 5 years ago. Happy to have finished it! ♨️ Because everyone asks: there is no pattern for it— I based this off of a few museum photos that the curators were gracious enough to send me. I do not have any intention of making a pattern for this due to the insane time commitment to make it, but I will be sure to show construction photos sometime in the future for those who are interested. This dress, which imagines Edward Scissorhands’ first Christmas, combines a fairy-tale silhouette and a playful pattern of tiny cut-out garlands of Korean moon jars, like the one in this exhibition. Drawing on hanbok’s dressmaking, this garment is cut and sewn flat in large rectangular shapes which become voluminous by pulling the side straps. #koreanfashion #mfaboston

Visitor demand spurred the MFA Boston to launch a $1 million community-based fundraising campaign to acquire “Lime Green Icicle Tower.” “[The MFA] had these little collection boxes throughout the museum,” says Chihuly Studio Exhibitions Director Britt Cornett, “and people were literally giving a dollar, giving 50 cents. This occurred starting with the close of the show in August of 2011, and by October of 2011, they were announcing the purchase, the permanent acquisition, into the collection for the museum.” Thanks to these thousands of small donations and a gift from the Donald Saunders and Liv Ullmann Family for the People of Boston, the Boston arts community was able to officially adopt the installation.
