This allowed the crew to use actual military bases and authentic hardware, including F-22 Raptors and A-10 Warthogs. In fact, it was the first time since the 9/11 attacks that the military allowed a film crew to shoot at the Pentagon!
The transformation sounds that are now iconic weren’t just random electronic noises. The sound design team actually paid homage to the original 1984 cartoon. They took the classic “chk-chk-chk-chk” sound effect and layered it with recordings of heavy machinery, sliding metal, and clicking car parts to make the 18-foot-tall robots feel grounded in reality.
To help the actors react to the giant robots that weren’t actually there, the production used massive “pole-heads”—long sticks with cutouts of the Transformers’ faces attached to the top. This ensured that Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf were always looking at the correct height for a 28-foot-tall Optimus Prime, rather than just staring at empty air!

FIFor Transformers, the cars weren’t just picked, they were built in collaboration with General Motors and director Michael Bay. Bumblebee’s Camaro wasn’t a regular production car. It was an early concept version of the 5th generation Camaro, years before it officially launched. Multiple units were created for filming, including custom body panels, interiors, and stunt cars, handled by GM engineers, picture car coordinators, and specialized stunt vehicle teams.
This move was fully intentional. During the making of the film, GM was already planning the return of the Camaro after years of discontinuation. A concept version had been revealed in 2006, and the production model was actively in development. The movie was used as a global platform to introduce this unreleased car to audiences. By featuring it as Bumblebee, a central character, GM created familiarity and demand before the car even reached showrooms.
What you see on screen is a pre-production concept car, slightly modified and enhanced with CGI, not something you could buy at the time. After the film’s success, demand for that exact Camaro skyrocketed. GM responded by fast-tracking the production model (2010 Camaro), keeping the design almost identical to the one seen in the film, and releasing it globally.
That’s why people suddenly started seeing yellow Camaros on real roads. They looked like Bumblebee, but they were official factory-built cars, not custom replicas.
