I have never used a micro four thirds camera until the past couple of months. Honestly, I was not aware of some of the amazing benefits that the system has to offer. For starters, the camera is extremely small and light despite being made of metal and having an IP53 rating. The combination of durability and portability have made this a camera that I can take anywhere despite the conditions. On top of that, the camera has a stacked sensor so it’s extremely fast and the mechanical burst speed has made it fun to use. The camera is loaded with creative looks and adjustable color profiles so over the next couple months I’ll be creating some new looks to share with you.

BIA few people were interested in why I chose the OM-1 camera, and I wanted to share the thinking behind it. Not as advice, not as a recommendation, just how I approached it.
I try to make fairly normal decisions when it comes to kit. I mostly use public transport, I don’t have unlimited budget or headspace, and I’m much more interested in being outside than owning lots of stuff.
For me, this was about:
– using what I already had
– upgrading slowly rather than all at once
- getting a secondhand bargain
– choosing something I could actually carry
– keeping wildlife photography accessible, not intimidating
I’ve birded with binoculars, my phone, and nothing at all. The camera came later, and it’s optional. The looking is the whole thing.
If you’re curious about Micro Four Thirds, second-hand kit, or easing into wildlife photography without going all-in straight away, I’m happy to share what I’ve learned so far.
And if you’re happily birding without a camera? You’re doing it exactly right.
