Millinery vs. Hat Bars — What’s the Difference? Let me explain! Millinery / Milliners ____ Millinery is a specialized art form that dates back over 500 years, which is what we do here at MH. A milliner builds the hat from the ground up before it is ever styled & designed meaning felts are blocked by hand, often dyed in house, with trims and wrappings dyed to match, trinkets sourced or individually crafted to complete each design. The process is slow, intentional, and rooted in traditional craftsmanship which takes time & intentionally so. The result is a well designed product built to last, with a luxury price point that reflects the labor, skill, and materials involved. Hat Bars ____ Hat bars are centered around experience. These hats are pre manufactured & built on an assembly line, then shaped and accessorized onsite for the customer. The focus is on speed, accessibility, and customization in the moment. Materials and techniques vary by brand, and pricing is generally more affordable due to volume production and machine mass made materials. When executed thoughtfully (Kemo Sabe is a great example), some hat bars can still feel elevated, but the model overall aligns more closely with fast fashion.
