ATYou want to argue with me? The truth is, there is no standard dimension. That said, historically speaking, the chair rail, or wainscot cap started much lower. Why?
It was based off of the human form, and had NOTHING to do with chairs. Chairs were rare and expensive. Ever wonder why you go into old homes (pre-industrial revolution), and they just feel… good? It’s because the proportions were meant to compliment the human form!
The overall purpose of millwork is to help establish scale and proportion in a room, and with the chair rail being closer to us than base or crown, it MATTERS. You don’t want it too high because it will make the room feel smaller (this does not relate to the Tudor-Style or Arts and Crafts wall paneling you may have seen).
Instead, err on the shorter side. Looking at classical proportions, in a 10 ft space, the math shows that wainscoting should actually be around 22.5”. That said, with today’s human form, you can go larger. Most carpenters may suggest 36”, but Brent Hull suggests somewhere between 28-32”. Never 36”. We did 31” (which is probably taller than Brent would like in our home).
