This land saved my life, and now I fight every single day to protect it, to feed my community, and to give inner city kids who grow up surrounded by concrete the chance to experience something bigger. Every morning I wake up and choose farming, not because life has been easy, but because farming gave me a reason to live. Yes, I made mistakes 30 years ago. I’ve never hidden from that. But the land gave me a second chance when the world had written me off. Agriculture saved my life and gave me purpose. And now all I want is to pass that same chance forward to inner-city kids who never touched soil, never stood beside or rode a horse, never harvested their own food, never felt what it means to breathe free. Let me be honest: farming is hard. The weather is unpredictable. Costs keep rising. And some days it feels like everything is stacked against farmers just trying to survive. On the topic of doing your own thing—and supporting your fellow creatives—I’m still pretty obsessed with the trailer for Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man,” a Mumbai-set revenge thriller that’s already gaining comparisons to “John Wick.” Patel co-wrote, produced and directed the movie, which he also stars in (he plays Kid, a character inspired by the Hindu god Hanuman). Netflix acquired it back in 2021, but last week, news broke that Jordan Peele had seen it and thought it deserved a theatrical release, so he acquired the rights. The movie will now be distributed by Universal through its partnership with Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and hits theatres on April 4.
