At the center of this story stands Ustad Ghulam Hüseyin Khan Natki from Kabul’s Harabat quarter: a master of Hindustani classical and Western music, a piano virtuoso, composer, teacher, and father of Ustad Mohammad Hussain Sarahang.
One day at Amir Habibullah’s court, as Western music was being discussed, he sat at the piano and played Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” with such mastery that the Amir, a true connoisseur, stood up to applaud – and the whole court rose with him.
Asked for his view on music, Natki said:
“Western music is of course beautiful in its own place. But Eastern music… it was born in India, lived its youth in Afghanistan, grew old in Iran, and sadly, died in Arabia.”
One of the songs marked by his legacy is “Mullah Mohammad Jan,” a Herati folk song whose roots go back to the Timurid era. It tells of Aysha and the poor madrasa student Mullah Mohammad Jan, their impossible love, and their vow to visit Hazrat Ali’s shrine in Mazar-i Sharif at Nowruz if they ever unite.
For centuries it survived only as oral tradition, until in 1906 Natki recorded “Mullah Mohammad Jan” in Calcutta with a “meshki saz” orchestra. That record still lives in Radio Afghanistan’s archives and a few Afghan collections.
At the fountain where the girls once gathered, their longing turned into a refrain:
“How long will you stay away from us, Aysha,
Why are you so distressed, Aysha,
You no longer come to the fountain, Aysha.”
Love’s scent spreads, recalling Saeb Tabrizi’s line: “Love needs no words; the meeting of two glances is enough.”
A headscarf carried by the wind, the justice of Amir Ali Shir Nava’i who goes to ask for Aysha’s hand, a vow to serve as sweepers at Mazar-i Sharif – this is how the story finds union, yet keeps echoing in Afghanistan’s musical memory.
Some say Mullah Mohammad Jan was Nava’i’s close student, and it was his master who first sensed his state and traced it back to love.
